I know I can pretty much guess the answer to this - will it take me approx 1 hour to travel from south cc to Lucan at about 5:30 PM? I know the schools are off this week but I do assume that the traffic on the N4 will still be awful.

Would the best route be out the N4 and left towards Adamstown or can anyone suggest a quicker route?

fastest route would be down the quays, out the N4 and take the Lucan exit (30-40mins max I reckon)

Thanks - do you think heading out canal onto N7 and then towards Newcastle Road would be any quicker?

You could get badly delayed heading out to the Red Cow roundabout and also then at Newlands Cross before you finally get to the outer ring road.
It's pretty much of a muchness. I reckon you'd be better heading out the N4.
There is another route you could take. You could cross over to the north side of the Liffey once you get to Islandbridge, boot past the Phoenix Park and then nip down through Strawberry Beds. You'd then exit at Lucan village and from there it's a short hop up to the Newcastle junction.
