    Hi,

we're carpeting an old house (hall stairs landing), looking for quality carpet at a keen price. I was in town at the weekend -

Arnotts - very expensive from what I can gather - quoted €60 per square metre and €16 per square meter for underlay (this seemed excessive). Range was good, but really no decent prices. quotes €60 for cavalier, curragh carpets a little more (around the 70 mark)

Des Kelly - went in there was there for 5 minutes - not a single person in the shop, no one outside, no one around the back - so we took a quick look and left - without speaking to anyone. I even pressed enter on their fancy cash register to see if that would trigger an alarm, but still no-one! Not sure what to think of these jokers.

TC Matthews - good quality stuff, but again prices are high.

Can anyone recommend to me a decent carpet fitter or someone who knows where to source carpets cheaper? Looking for a carpet knowitall really, or a professional who wont try rip us off!

    Thanks

You don't say where you are but the best value I've ever found is McIntyres Furniture & Carpet World just outside Cavan Town- they deliver and fit in Dublin. Worth a look. They are in the business park more or less opposite the Cavan Crystal hotel on the way into Cavan town from Dublin - Dublin rd Cavan (049)4331245 (absolutely no affiliation). They are very nice and knowledgeable to deal with. I think they do charge delivery but are v reliable - have been in Cavan for decades......they are less than 90 mins drive from Blanch so not too far really if it saves you a packet.

We have also bought from Carpet right and got mega good deals there......

    best of luck.

Carpetrite have crap underlay though, that throw back to the 70's rubbery underlay. 'Blue Heaven' thick foam underlay is the way to go, makes even a cheap carpet feel nice.

You can get a carpet like New Georgian Velvet for about €42 Sq M or a basic 80% wool twist pile for about €25 Sq M. This is ordering specific sizes.
Many carpet shops/ Interior Designers would have stock carpeting for even less.

Polyprop is fine for kids particularly if bleach cleanable.
You should be able to get a good 80/20 for under € 20 Sq metre in basic colours
