AA roadside rescue overcharge?

    Hi there,

I'm new to those roadside rescue package stuff, but I'm getting a bit confused on what happened last week.

We were driving back from dublin to cork, and we stopped the car on the road just outside of the city when we heard some strange noise from engine. I had to call AA to tow the car the their appointed garage and i was told I need to join their annual membership to do so..

They annual subscription is 240 euro at the night they told m and I gave them my credit card details as it's pretty much my only choice..

I'm just looking up AA website https://secure.aaireland.ie/personal-membership/default.asp to read its T&C, and surprisingly I found the package should only cost 139 euro since they didn't provide any additional service those extra options would offer.

Has anyone been in this situation before? any idea where this extra 100 euro charge come from and possibly to get a refund?

    Many thanks :D

It would seem you had to pay extra as your were broken down already. If you join normally you may not breakdown during your membership and that cost reflects the averaging out of the risk. It's like trying to buy home insurance as your house is burning down, its going to cost more.

Any chance you are an a higher than standard package. I pay my membership by direct debit per month which is €18.75, costing about €225 annually. Thats for the next package up from just the standard roadside rescue. Did you get homestart or something?

240 is the price for Basic for Normal + Homestart + Rescue Plus.

Stevie - you can join the AA at any time, but you may not use them for the first 24 (or is it 48) hours.

The AA is extortion anyway. To the OP, you'd have been better off, and cheaper, just calling a towing company (11850).

I see, we recently declined renewal from them due to cost, and got a letter (after having taken out cover with Aviva) offering quite a discount, which we would have taken!

Moral of the story, their prices are flexible, if the person you are talking too does not offer you a discounted price, ask for a supervisor.

    thanks guys

Stevie - thanks, this might be true

paperplanes and testicle, I don't really know what package they've put me on, but if that includes Rescue plus, they should have given me a replacement car or something like that (as the website says).. I wasn't told any of these..

The wife's car packed in one day & I called the AA about joining.
AA; are you broken down at the moment?
    Yes.
AA; In that case its usually €140 but €240 for an immediate callout.
    F€ck, Ar$e, b@lls!
AA; Here's a number you can call instead, local towing company...

Insurance renewal time made sure to get roadside assistance.
