Audi A4 - Burning Rubber...

I know this is probably very vague but I haven't a clue about cars except for how to drive them...

I have an Audi A4 2TDI which I bought last October. I noticed over the weekend a smell of burning rubber coming from the car which became more obvious when I opened the bonnet. I have booked it in to the garage that I bought it from to be looked at first thing tomorrow morning, my dilemma though is whether I should drive it today or not. I need to go somewhere this afternoon which will involve about an hour drive there and back and could do without canceling but equally don't want to end up at the side of the road with the engine in flames

Just to add also, the engine temp gauge is reading normal and there are no other signs of a problem.

Any thoughts, it is advisable to drive this afternoon?!

    Thanks

Firstly, did you check if there was oil in the engine and your coolant level was OK?

No, when I got home last night the engine seemed too hot to go near so I reckoned best wait till this morning before going at anything. Been minding the kids this morning till the Mrs gets home so will check that now.

I kinda assumed (wrongly I'm sure) that oil and coolant would be ok till at least first service? About 10k km's on the clock and not due a service for a while yet.

    possible burning clutch smell??

In my extremely limited knowledge, I don't think it's the clutch - could this give a burning smell from the engine area?

I checked coolant and oil and both appear fine - oil level showing approx midway between min and max and coolant just below max level.

Also, is it normal for a garage to charge to rent a car while you leave your own in? I would have thought they would provide a loan car when the car is still quite new, only a few months old!

Absolutely not. Some garages charge for a car when doing servicing work, but never for repair work under a new car warranty.

Cheers, I think I'll phone their sales section then and complain. The guy in service this morning said they can't give a loan car but might be able to drop me somewhere if they had someone available to do so...

I didn't see why I should have to pay 40 quid or so to rent a car having only spent 42k four months ago on a new car but thought maybe it was the norm and did the Irish thing of saying nothing :o

So what was causing the burning smell? Did you find out?
