What would you do (insurance claim)

    Details:
Event: Crashed car on Friday. My fault, nobody else involved, no injury to me.
    Car: Ford Focus, 2001, 1.6 L, ~130,000 miles
Insurance: 2 years no claims bonus (heading towards three)
    No claims protection: NO
    Cost of repair: ~€2200

    Questions:
    1) Is it worth repairing?
    2) Should i claim from my insurance (I guess they will decide whether to write off, or to repair)?
    3) If i claim ~€2200 from my insurance, what will it do to my premium next year?
    4) If i decide not to claim from my insurance, and not to repair, how much would i be likely to get for it in scrappage (assuming i will not qualify for the rumoured Government scrappage scheme).
    5) What would you do in this situation?

a suggestion would be to have a look around and see if you can get a similar model car for less than the cost of repairs ...if you can .... happy days !! (and you keep your NCB)

i think you might be better off getting a replacement car, maybe sell off parts of the car that are still in good nick (ie Radio, windscreen, doors, etc etc - might make some money towards a replacement car)...or find a garage that will take it as scrappage and give you some money towards a new car.

according to CBG the approx sale price of a 2001 focus is 4-5K....but if you find the right one and haggle with cash in hand you might spend less than 3K..... your premium will jump up for 2-3years if you claim and you loose your NCB.

For me: car is not worth repairing as it would drop too much in value - if its repaired at a cost of €2200 then the actual value (assuming €4-5K before crash) will drop to €2-3K .... and you legally have to inform a buyer that its been crashed and repaired - so car will only be worth the cost of the repairs and to justify the repairs you would have to keep the car for at least 2-3more years.(assuming no further problems arise)

I would tel them It was a total write off. anf that the car is unsafe for repair.

I crashed my car on Friday near Tipp Town aswell and Im dealing with the same problem at the moment.

Fortunatly for me it wasnt my fault but the gards didnt catch the person at fault.

I would be very interested in finding out what will happen with your case so if you dont mind PM me to let me know.

Is it worth spending €2200 + on an 8 year old car? I dont think so.

You would also be heavily penalised by your insurance company for the next three - five years. It happened to me a year or so ago, and my insurance has shot through the roof.

What you need to work out is - will the added cost of insurance over the next few years be more or less than the cost of repair? I.e., will it cost you more than €2200 EXTRA to insure your car?

If it works out more expensive, then i would try to sell your own car for parts and put it towards a new car. This means you keep your NCB, and you wont have to spend a large amount extra on insurance.

Thats what i'd be doing anyhow.

I am inclined to agree, especially with the mileage.

I am not sure how to figure this out. I have been told that if you notify your insurance company of a crash, even if you don't claim, it will be taken into account when you renew.
Do you mind me asking how much you claimed, and how much your insurance has gone up by this year. I appreciate this is personal info, so no worries if you would rather not share. Myabe PM if that is better, but again, i understand if you would rather not.

I smashed up a 06 Focus, fairly badly. It wasnt a write off, but there was just under 12k's worth of damage. All the airbags went off, bent chassis, wings, suspension etc.

My insurance went from €900 to €2200.

I know that was a big claim, but i think if it was half the amount again, it would be still around the same.

It was a bad night actually.... Wont be doing it again in a hurry. Apparently i was lucky to walk away from it according to the Garda that attended the scene. Lots of bruising, but nothing permanent.

I think you should just sell your own car, and pick up yourself a bargain. Thats what i'd be doing anyhow!
