It looks as though I am set to lose my job and so will have to sign on :( I was getting JB last year for 3 months and had it paid into my bank. . . as I have had a claim in before, would they allow me to be paid into the bank or would I have to go to the post office every week? I'd hate that, it'd be humiliating, and what if I couldn't make it to the post office some week?

Everyone is paid by going to the post office now, except if you're claiming disability or other non-unemployment benefit. Yeah it's embarrassing but it's the only way they'll pay you now!

And thats DSW's effort to tackle the cheats.

    Humiliating?
You've been paying PRSI since last year, your claim is valid so go and make it when the time comes. Well actually it's for the assessor to decide so let them make that decision.
So what if RTE film you when you are queing, you have nothing to be ashamed about.

Not anymore, you have to collect every week.
If you can't make then explain this to them. But make it your business to be there, after all if it was a job interview you'd be there

I think they started the post office thing to stop fraud, don't ask!
If it's a thing you can't make it in to the post office each week then maybe explain that to them. I think if you give them notice you will be gone away for a week then you should get a double payment the following week.
I suppose it depends on how far away you live from the post office & whether you have transport.
As regards being ashamed, have a look in the queue & see the amount of other people doing the exact same thing as you.
I don't see how any of us should be ashamed because of a global economic downturn. But I get what you mean.

    Thanks for the advice everyone.

As for not being able to collect the money, if you are paid on say a Wednesday, do you have to collect it that day or do you have up until the following Wednesday to pick it up?

I can understand why somebody would be humiliated by collecting the dole at the postoffice. Even though I think they should not be ashamed of it in any way at all.

I guess this stems from the idea that we like to be independent and earn our own money and when you have worked for so long you get used to it and sometimes you might give out about other people being on the dole, people you know that have never worked a day in their life and live for the dole, As the guy above said, so they can go straight to the pub and the bookies and spend it all. So when a hard working bloke like yourself gets laid off and needs to finally sign on, you fear that the locals will think the same of you, or that they might want to know your business or feel they are looking down at you.

Don't be ashamed. Social welfare is a hallmark of any half decent democracy. You are essentially cashing in on the PRSI you have been paying for however long you have been working.

Heh, Don't miss a collection, they won't double up the next week you go in. whatever day you have to collect it. collect it that day whatever you do.

I cant understand why someone would be humiliated to stand in line at the Post Office to collect their money.

I have friends who arent entitled to JB or JA and have lost their jobs and havent two euros to rub together. They would give anything to be standing in line at the Post Office to get money.

Also, the money is in the Post Office every week and stays there for 3 days AFAIK. If you dont collect it within the 3 days you lose it. Thats not that unfair i think, cos if you need it you'd be there to collect it. Your unemployed remember...you should be able to go in and collect it.

As for people "forgetting" to collect their money

You have friends who have worked and are not entitled to JA or JB? How come? I thought anyone (Irish citizen) aged 18+ who is unemployed was entitled to social welfare? Or are they non-nationals who haven't worked for 2 years plus?

I have heard on this forum (although I'm not sure if it's true) that you can get it put into your bank account after a number of months, 6 or 9.

All in all, going to the post office once a week isn't such a terrible thing.

Checked this out today, and after 6 months of signing on you can request to have it paid into your bank account. They won't always pay though - for example if you have been caught going out of the country and not informing them etc, they can have reservations about paying into your bank account. Paying into the post office is a measure to try and prevent social welfare fraud.

I tried to do this today and was told point blank that they don't do it, ever.

i was told on two seperate occasions by SWO employees that it is possible, i was given a timeline of 6 months.

has anyone here changed over? for instance if i went into the SWO tomorrow (fri) to sign the forms to change it over would my dole be lodged into my bank account next week or is there a long wait for the change over to come into place?
