Moving from NI to the ROI - Car VRT ?

Good evening all,

just a quick query for you all, the girlfriends brother is moving from Newry to Cork with work, currently driving a 05 alfa on NI plates obviously he'll have to change them over to ROI plates, i remember hearing years ago that if you owned a car in the uk for over 6 months that you did not have to have to pay VRT or something to that effect, he's owned the car from new and would be able to prove ownership since 05. does anyone know anything more about it.

No need for VRT under current rules as you've had it more than 6 months
