RTÉ is to release a commemorative DVD to celebrate Ireland's historic RBS 6 Nations Grand Slam win.

Capturing all of the emotion as well as the action during Ireland's 2009 6 Nations campaign, the three-disc DVD to be released on 1 May includes exclusive pre match build up, post match interviews and feature packages as well as all of Ireland's 6 Nations matches on their path to Grand Slam glory.

Special features include all of Ireland's tries from every angle and packages produced and directed by RTÉ Sport's Dave Berry of award-winning 'Reaching for Glory' fame which capture the emotion, pride and passion of this campaign.

The DVD will also feature George Hook's interviews with the 1948 Grand Slam winners.

The DVD is to be released throughout Ireland & the UK.

Was expected I suppose, but it should be interesting too see. I thought the Reaching for Glory DVD was excellent, so hopefully this one will be as good. Maybe we'll get a look into what Kidney is like in the dressing room!

Holy Jebus, three DVD's seems a bit excessive I'd hate to see the asking price, though I think I'll shell out either way. Hope they're not rushing this thing and skimping on the production values!

I don't think it'll feature anything like that to be honest. Main reason is there was no expectation before the 6N. DK said when he took over that they just wanted to enjoy it and see what they could do so unless they've got CCTV footage, they've got nothing (unless the Apres Match lads are covering the oval ball too).

Sounds like quite a bit of filler on the DVD - the Hook interview with 1948 that was shown. All the tries...from different angles (so basically the TMO). Will probably still invest despite all that though...

    🤪

I'm going to get it. I'm amazed they haven't put it out yet. Will it have all of Ireland's 6 Nation's Matches on it?

Yeah that's true... guess they didn't have any cameras in the dressing room like last time. It does sound like 3 discs of what we've already seen before, though I suppose they need the space if they're putting all the matches on it! Hopefully there'll be some nice surprises on it too.

I already have every match (including the non irish games), all the pre and post match stuff on RTE and most of the U20 games recorded on the aul computer. So i'll give this one a pass unless they have some extra EXTRA features on there.

I would love if they went back through the years i.e 2000-2009 looking back at some of the games of all the joys and dissapointments encountered before they finally achieved the Grand Slam. I feel the DVD would be far more interesting but it still should be good. I cant wait to buy it.

It would be hard enough to watch alot of those games again.
Ireland vs France - good game ,some nice rugby
Ireland vs Italy - brutally bad first half some nice tries to finish
Ireland vs England - the worst game I was ever at , rubbish, Ireland should have won by 20 points
Ireland v Scotland - dragged down again to the Scots low level, barely watchable.
Ireland vs Wales - 1st half worth watching only for the collisions,2nd half was good with a great finish.
    I'll probably buy it.

Maybe they should be releasing two editions. A one disc set, with highlights, and a three disc one with all the matches, for the hardcore fans.

I dunno if they could drag on the team getting their medals and lifting the trophy for 2 hours tbh.....

Well seeing as we only win a GS every 60 years or so i'll probably shell out for this regardless if its good or badly put together. Will be a good souvenir.

Disappointing about the lack a extra's.

Fairly disappointing DVD to be honest. Great to have all the games in good quality at your disposal but apart from that it's ridiculous to think that they rushed this out instead of waiting for players to become available and give some talking heads spiels about the whole tournament etc. The extras are just what you saw on RTE during the course of the Six Nations. For anyone that missed it however, it does include the stunning video montage of the Wales game put together for Against The Head which is essential viewing, absolutely fantastic testament to the match.

A little FYI, it's €27 on the RTE website but only €19.90 in Tesco and Heatons. Also my local SuperValu here in Maynooth has it for €15, I'm sure others do too.

Yeah, I haven't bought it because I expected my reaction to be the same as yours. In all fairness I have all the matches recorded anyway, so I don't need a DVD of the matches.

I will wait in the hope that a proper DVD commemorating the achievement is brought out with player insights and other extra features etc.

When would you like it to have been released then? September? October?

Its all the games in the one collection with some montage extras. Nearly 10 hours of material with the most important part being the actual rugby, surely?
There was never going to be a behind-the-scenes section given it was the management's first season and there was never going to be interviews given the season is still in full swing and then the Lions and Ireland plus Ireland 'A' tours head away.

Extras does not only mean behind the scenes. Yes, that would be cool...but like you said a bit unlikely given it was the first season. However they could have done extensive interviews with the players/coaching staff/pundits with regards to the various games, etc.

And if that meant delaying the release until December I personally wouldn't mind. The DVD is fine, but certainly nothing special, especially considering how good "Reaching for Glory" was....and we didn't even win the championship/grand slam that season.

I'd say this is a quick cash-in to satisfy demand and that we'll see the proper package with player interviews, backroom footage and the whole works later on in the year-maybe an IRFU sanctioned one? I remember RTE did do a good one though in the 2004 Triple Crown year.

I'd say the real thing will be out for Christmas.

And the "real thing" probably wouldn't have extensive coverage of the games. IIRC Reaching for Glory, incredible as it was didn't have too much "normal" game coverage that let you just watch the game itself...

Yeah, but that is what Sky+ is for. :p

Well...yes. It would be a far better package if they had waited until the Lion's tour concluded and got some proper coverage. I had no problem waiting for the Munster DVD after the Heineken Cup, that was a Christmas release IIRC

The marketing departments at RTE and the IRFU obviously looked at other rugby unions' methods in launching season-retro DVDs and followed them.

Reaching for Glory was released not long before the end of May, by the way. In fact, it was the day before the Irish squad headed off for Argentina (I was at the launch in Limerick at Clohessys).

Yes its worth buying if you want all the games in one set. I did because I do.
No there is no behind-the-scenes stuff like in the Reaching for Glory DVD, which is pretty obvious considering it was Kidney & Co's first season.

I doubt there will ever be camera in Declan Kidneys Ireland dressing room.

Will probably get it anyway, even if there is no behind the scenes stuff. Was on the hill for the games against England and France so would be nice to watch them again, as you can see fúck all from the hill :)

Anyone know if there'll be a Leinster Heineken cup DVD released, like there was for Munster?

There were far more interesting matches in that, than in the grand slam imo.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5 hairyerthanu

    I would imagine they will

main reason being -- it was so unexpected - as Leinster is such a big province with such a big population and with the mark up they can get on each DVD they produce they will make a killing .

I would say give it another month and it will already be in the shops - just like the Grandslam DVD .

well I would hope so anyway
