So last week, tucked away on the side of a page, the Sunday Independent had a few paragraphs on Garda Overtime pay.

One Garda in Mayo picked up €80,000 in one year.

Many others had overtime pay of around €50,000.

So what does the average cozzer pick up per year in terms of overtime??

I really do find this hard to believe. Imagine the hours that would have to have been worked for that.

TBH as an active member im lucky to get 8 hours overtime per roster (roster = 28days). And there is such a big problem with O/T i usually take time off in lieu. I imagine 8 hours is even a lot in current climate. Last year i suppose it averaged at 20-35 hours per roster, but that means working quite a lot and very few membersin the sticks did that. We have lives after all.

i think the garda in mayo you refer to is in relation to the shell to sea business and afaik 80000 was his take home with overtime not 80000 of overtime

    Typical money-grabbing guard.

Expecting to be paid for working overtime. How vulgar.

Should be grateful to have a job.

Overtime pay depends on the station, rank and boss from my expirience.

A member in charge could have lot of stuff to do, espicially in a smallish town, gardai licensed to carry firearms used to do a good few checkpoints etc

And not forgetting court! A member in charge or similar could sit in court a good bit and not be called, thats a good bit of overtime to be gotten just out of court cases!

Clearly though, all garda overtime is being cut back!

Had a colleague recently who decided to transfer from our snug country station to the city as he wasn't getting any overtime and had heard of the crock of gold that lay inside the pale. Got chatting to him recently and he's a bit unhappy as there's no OT and he's permanently on the beat, from being regularly in the car or the station, not to mention cost of living. The grass always looks greener.

    exactly deadwood!
i get this attitide a lot in my job too (am a doc)

when these figures hit the headlines they neglect to mention that to earn overtime you actually have to work the hours on top of your regular hours.

noone bothers figuring out what hours would have to be worked to earn that much OT and noone ever thinks of teh detrimental effect those hours can have on your health, relationships and lifestyle

    I don't volunteer for overtime.
    I don't want overtime.
Unfortunately I don't get any choice in it.
I have to go to court on my days off, I can't leave a scene because my shift is over.
It's impossible to plan ahead, keep appointments...god forbid you want a social life or be involved in a club/sports etc.

Now I can't moan about it, because that's the job I chose... part of the deal etc.
