Firstly, apologies if I've got the wrong forum here.

I've spotted a Western Digital 1TB external hard drive, with firewire and USB connectivity for €170 on komplett.ie.

    Just wondering:
    1. Is this good value for money?
    2. Is Western Digital a reliable brand?

Many thanks in advance for any help :D

    Some extra info:
    Interface Type: IEEE 1394b (Firewire 800) / IEEE 1394 (Firewire) / Hi-speed USB / eSATA-300
    Buffer Size: 16MB

No, I wouldn't say it's great value. The only thing it has going for it is the range of ports (eSata, Firewire 800); cheaper HDDs usually just have the USB 2.0 (quite slow).

But those extra ports arent enough to make it worth €170.

If you can live with just USB 2.0, you'll get the WD 1TB Elements for €89. And if you want the faster ports, just shop around, you'll definitely get e 1TB drive with eSata for well under €170. Sure I got a 2TB external for €200 recently (raid, usb + eSata)
