    Hi

I bought the Sony Vaio VGN-SZ2XP/C about two years ago when it was top of the range. Unfortunately its become a bit old and requires an update. As I know very little about computers, can you advise if its worth the upgrade and how much it would cost? Ill use the game Empire Total War's specs as an example of something I want to use but currently can't as its waaaaay too slow

    Vaio
CPU Intel Core Duo Processor T2500, 2.00GHz
    Memeroy 1GB/Go DD24 SDRAM (533Mhz)
    HDD 100GB/Go
    WLan 802.11a/b/g
GRpahucs NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 with Turbo Cache supporting 128Mb/Mo
    OS Windows XP

    Empire Total War Requirements
    OS Xp
Porcessor 2.4 GHz Intel or greater
    Memory 1GB Ram
    Video Card 256 Mb

I can see that I fall short on most of these but do I really require them all?

Basically then, what do I need to uprgade so it'll work, how much it cost and if I buy from Ebay, can I do it myself or is that just reckless??

    Thanks in advance

You can't upgrade it to allow it to play Empire. You would need a better graphics card, and you can't upgrade graphics cards on laptops.
You could upgrade the RAM if you want to improve the general speed, but it won't make Empire Total War run.

You could increase the ram to 4 gig for about €90. Apart from that replacing CPU, Graphics card (If not inboard), Hdd etc all adds up.

I'd hazard a guess and say that the maximum RAM that machine can support would probably be 2Gb. Seeing the age of it.
I would at least upgrade the RAM to 2GB, very cheap to do and will give you the greatest gains. The above system requirements, specifically the CPU clock speed are referring to a single core processor, so i'd hazard a guess and say that your machines dual core processor would suffice.

seriously you won't be able to run Empire on that laptop no mtter what you do with it. I've 2.4ghz dual core, 4gig ram, better version of 8600m gpu in my laptop and it barely runs acceptably even at the lowest settings for me.

    Thanks all

I can run the game its just painfully slow. Those of you familiar with Empire will appreciate the amount of loading between years/naval battles and although I can technically play it, it just takes forever to do anything. Graphics, sound etc. are all fine and if you didnt move the mouse, you'd never realise how bad it was!

Since it does function, albeit slowly, would doubling the RAM from 2 to 4 fix this problem?

    Thanks again

so you can play it as long as you don't move the mouse

You'd want to make sure your laptop supports 4Gb of RAM. Seeing the age of it, it may only support a max of 2GB
