Free all angels and Meltdown were alrite, wouldnt listen to them now though.

They have some really dodgy songs, but some crackers....

1977 is a brilliant album that should be part of everyones collection, they have gone downhill since unfortunately, although free all angels was good also.

free all angels was the last thing decent by them 1977 was superb. their last offering was absolutely dire though.

Loved them back in the Trailer/1977 days but found both Nu-Clear Sounds and Free All Angels patchy in the extreme. Pretty much gave up on them after that and haven't listened to them in years.

Have to say I love these sort of threads, as they bring me back to stuff I haven't listened to in ages. Definitely going to dig out 1977 and Trailer now. Might do it this evening actually.

Trailer, 1977 and Nu-Clear Sounds are all in regular rotation on my ipod.
Live at the Wireless is pretty good too.

Lads FreeAll Angels was pretty decent, just had a listen to it there. Burn baby burn, sometimes, shining light, nicole are all good songs...ther rest is pretty crappy though.

similar feeling, although only liked trailer and 1977, seen them during the 1977 tour at the astoria in london, still one of the best gigs i've been to, oh yeah and uncle pat are two great tracks, think uncle pat was used for a heniken ad on UTV some time in the mid 90's

some mixed views on them I see :),Do you think they better off going back to being a 3 piece?

I don't really think it makes a whole lot of difference sound-wise, I think the problem is in having a lack of really good songs. In fairness to Tim Wheeler, he has written some great tunes but for every one of those there's 2 or 3 poor to mediocre songs.
I think one mistake they made was not letting Charlotte Hatherley have a greater songwriting input. She's done some decent stuff in her solo career, much better than a lot of the Wheeler written album filler that Ash have put out.

On their day they're one of the best bands going, especially live.

'A Life Less Ordinary' is their best song imo.

What a song, definetly their best. A real summer song.

Where did a life less ordinary pop out of, i don't see it on any of their albums (or am I blind?)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,665 ✭✭✭gary the great

I think it was a song for some film or something, so wasnt on any of the albums.

    Could be wrong though.

Jaysus remember the song they did "envy", holy crap that just wrecked Ash for me...

'A Life Less Ordinary' is from the film of the same name starring Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz.

    The intro is quality.

    God awful movie...
Saw them live back in 2001 and weren't bad. Was never big into them but there are some really good songs on Trailer.

Nu-clear sounds wasn't bad at all either, just got a lot of criticism cos it didn't live up to 1977.

1977, Trailer and Free All Angels were all great imo, but I don't really like the other albums. FAA was a great summer album, really takes me back to summer college days, lying on the green. I ended up seeing them 4 times the summer after FAA as they whored themselves around the festival circuit and I haven't really listened to them since.

The last I heard of them, they said they had given up making albums but they would continue to release singles (Wheeler said he always thought they were a better singles band) and tour. I don't think I've heard any of those singles though.

One of thee most overrated bands in the last couple of decades. There's so much better out there but for some reason they get talked about as being a great band. Tim Wheeler can't sing for toffee anyway. Ffs, Supergrass are a better band.

think a lot of people just have a soft spot for them

Didnt they publicly burn a couple hundred Westlife Cd's a few years back? Went down well with me! Free All Angels is their best album, like someone already said, brings back good memories of that summer 2001

The nordies really hate the whole boyband genre push down here. Therapy?'s Andy Cairns really hates it and discloses it publicly on the Scopophobia DVD.

All lies. Except for the Supergrass bit. They're not comparable bands though, different musical styles

Never really liked Ash but they had a song way back about '95/'96 called Uncle Pat which was quite good.

Not sure if it was ever on any album.

Four good songs doesn't make an overall decent album though, but I absolutely love Burn Baby Burn and Sometimes.

Ah, not lies - opinion. :)
Although I think the assertion that Tim Wheeler can't sing well is a fair and correct one.

I like a lot of Ash songs - there's something a bit disposable and throwaway about them though, in my opinion. They're kinda an "indie" boy band. Tim Wheeler and especially Mark Hamilton are VERY easy on the eye...

I love Jesus Says and Wild Surf on Nuclear Sounds - they got very American with that album. It worked, in my opinion.

To an extent. Quite a few bands went that direction regarding changing their music. Jesus and Mary Chain's Munki album had a similar sound.

Of course, JAMC dissolved shortly after Munki was released, and Ash took too long to capitalise on their US success for Free All Angels to take advantage of their impact and the band ultimately fell by the wayside as a result.

    It was on trailer.

    It was on trailer.

It's also on the 3CD 1977 reissue, which basically consisted of the album, it's b-sides, the US version of trailer which had 3 other tracks and a few other bonus unreleased material.

They played the ATL at the Ulster Hall thing and were SO bad!

Tim Wheeler really can't sing. Rick the drummer sang backing vocals very poorly.
