I have sky + in the tv room and sky in the bedroom using three of the outputs from the quad lnb on my sky dish. could i hook up a dvd/hdd recorder with digital tuner to take the fourth output from the lnb and effectively get freesat channels and be able to record them?? i was specifically thinking of the sony rdr-hxd890.

ps. not sure if its a suitable topic for the 'terrestrial' forum but reading through all the posts about dtt and that you guys seem to know the most about all these things and i seemingly know nothing

No. The digital tuner in the sony rdr-hxd890 is a DVB-T tuner. This means it can receive digital terrestrial signals via a TV aerial. This type of tuner is incompatible with digital satellite signals (DVB-S).

Since your Sky + box will already record programmes, you could connect a DVD recorder via a SCART lead to the other Sky box and record that way.

You can get FreeSat HDD recorders, or a few expensive FTA/payTV non-Sky satellite receivers with HDD PVR *AND* a DVD recorder. I've used a Reelbox lite this way, though I don't recommend it.

I've used a basic analogue tuner DVD recorder via VCR SCART composite from Sky Digibox and it's better than S-VHS. (Plustron €99 via Dunnes).

thanks for the advice guys, don't think i'll bother with the hdd pvr's anyway they all sound very buggy and even if it worked 90% of the time that 10% would drive me mad. Even the €1500 reelbox avantgarde thing has a problem list the length of your arm. helpful bloke in panasonic limerick, advised me to wait a few months till the new range of dvd/hdd recorders come out with the mpeg-4 dvb-t tuners to pick up irish freeview when it gets up and running
