Just put this album on for the first time in about 2 years, i forgot just how good it is. I prefer it to there first album, although that seems to be the most listened too. Its the first ever 'alt'- country album i ever listened too, and its seriously influenced my taste ever since. The song 'never tell' even gave me a stutter when i was about 14, it lasted about two days, god i was an edjit. Anyone else know it?

Don't know it, but I definitely must get it. I own both Permanent Record (a best of compilation) and the s/t and love them both.

its brilliant - personally I'd say one of their best albums.

All I knew by them up to a few weeks ago was Blister in the Sun, which I like a fair bit but I wouldn't be as utterly bowled over by it as some people are. But BBC 4 recently showed a documentary about Rough Trade records followed by various performances over the years from bands signed to Rough Trade - Violent Femmes were on it, performing Country Death Song. What an absolutely amazing piece of music. I want to get buying - think I'll start with Permanent Record to give me a taster of all their eras.

I love music that evokes the darker side of rural America. Fascinating.

I think it's a great album, but not too sure about the whole religious undertone to it.
That said, this is probably one of their best songs:

An amazing band, that really set the scene for the likes of Jay Farrar.

Ah some very good songs on that. Got introduced to Mazzy Star's Fade Into You. Quite brilliant, even if I have overplayed it at this stage.
