A critical error occurred while installing windows installer 3.1

    I get this error while trying to install a Logitech USB Webcam.

    I've tried restarting in safe mode and still get the error. Also tried "sfc /scannow" to fix errors but still won't work.

    Any idea what might cause this or how I could fix it?

    Come on guys - of course I had googled it. I had seen all links mentioed and more, and I have gone throgh the full instructions on that Microsoft site around permissions etc but I'm still getting that error message.

    Kinda lost as to what to do next though

    Can I take it you are using XP?

    Have you Netframework installed & up to date?

    Thanks. Yes netframework was installed - I updated it anyway but no difference.

    Any other ideas on things can try or reinstall etc to possibly get this working?

    I had the same issue last week but it was on Win 2000 & it had to have update4 before Windows Installer would have any of it.

    Have you tried running the Windows Installer "Cleanup Utility" ? It's used for solving problems installing 3rd party Progs requiring Windows Installer 3.1.

    I just tried to install Windows Live Messenger and I got a similar error. It pointed me to this page: http://help.live.com/help.aspx?market=en-us&project=wlinstallerv3&querytype=keyword&query=wli80280002&ec=0x80280002

    It says to reinstall "Windows Installer" - however when I try to do that it says the service pack I am using is newer than the program I am trying to install. Feckin Microsoft - why can't they just let me at it!

    I'm uninstalling SP3 maybe that will work

    Uninstalled SP3 and reinstalled windows installer - worked! :D
