excuss me if if done before and if possibly the daftest thing you'll read this weekend, but went off up north today to save me some money in search of some mtb spd shoes, was preferably going to go for a pair of shinmano or sidi, unfortunently on this occassion the shop only had shinmano road shoes, but just to get a feel for the size tried on a pair of size 43 and they felt quite snug

heres were it might get silly, thinking of just ordering the mtb shoes of the interweb, would a 43 shinmano mtb shoe feel different size wise to 43 shinmano road shoe, you know the way a size 9 nike trainer might feel different to a addidas in the same size,

daft, am not sure, but input would be appreciated

    :o

I had a similar problem. Every brand, and probably mtb / road shoes, are different. They each have there own width etc as well. TBH, I would buy shoes without trying them on first. Its too important if your doing alot of riding.

    Heya,

I think you should be fine - I've size 45 sidi mtb shoes and 45 vittoria road shoes and borrowed shimano road shoes in the same size and found the shoe sizing to be totally consistent.

But yeah, it'd probably be a good idea to try shoes on before hand if possible and if you've found a big difference between brands.

FWIW, I'd buy Sidi, the other brands have been fine but the Sidi build quality has been the best in my experience.

I'm gonna contradict you and say that in my experience Shimano MTB shoes are much better than SIDIs.

I've bought two pairs of Shimano MTB shoes online, and sized them at 0.5 size more than my normal shoe size. This worked well for me.

I sell footwear (not cycling) and have found that sizes vary enormously from brand to brand but also vary with products within the same brand range. I would recommend trying on any footwear before purchasing it.

Each to their own I suppose :)

just my experience with the two brands - the next pair i buy when the time comes will, unless something happens in the interim, be Sidi.

I imagine they would be fairly close in size. I upgraded my old SIDI road shoes that I bought about 8 years ago to the same size last month. I bought from the web and they feel exactly the same.

Same goes for me and adidas trainers, same size always fits perfectly.

On a side note - does anybody know if shoe covers go over regular runners or are they designed just for cycling shoes?

Need something to keep my runners clean and dry on a wet day on a 5 mile commute!

You could try sealskinz socks they're about €30-40 euro for a pair, available in most outdoor shops. They work really well.

I wear them over Adidas Sambas no problem - I imagine that you could probably get them onto most runners if you buy a large enough pair.

They'll fit over alright, you just might scuff and tear them on a regular pedal or when you put your foot on the ground.

Depends on the runners - if they're proper runners (for running) the chunkyness may mean you need a bigger cover.

If they are more fashion runners (pub shoes!!!) or tennis / squash runners etc they might fit.

I do get a bit of rub on the crank all right.

    Thanks for the replies!

Was looking at these - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=9275

They are to cover casual runners - want to avoid having to bring spare pair (and socks) in a rucksack!

I'm liking the website mentioned above too - decent looking prices and free delivery

I find for most shoes that if you know your European size, then it's much more reliable than the UK/US size.

Wiggle have a sale on Pearl Izumi SPD shoes at the moment btw. I have a pair and I find them great: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Pearl_Izumi_Quest_MTB_Cycling_Shoes/5360035607/
