We did ours 2 weeks ago with Estrella del Sur. We went from San Pedro to Uyuni but they have offices in Uyuni and Tupiza too. It was fantastic and we had no problems (unlike some other groups we met). We chose them because we read the complaints/reports book in the San Pedro tourist office and they were the only one to get good reviews.

Just wondering did either of you guys see if it was possible to hire your own 4WD to go out on the Salt Flats or is a guided tour the only way ?

I didn`t see anybody else doing this. The only time I`ve read about it is in the context of people getting lost, which means some people must have done it! One of the drivers with another group was drunk on the second morning and told his group that one of them would have to drive. We never saw them again, so we assume that they just went back to San Pedro!

What a horrible thing to even consider. You need a driver so you enjoy the sights, we were driving for around 8 hours a day doing the tour, it would be unthinkable to do the driving yourself, why bother?
