We're running a theatrical event in a few months time and we're unsure of licensing laws. The venue itself doesn't have a liquor license. However we wanted to provide a complimentary glass of wine for attendees or maybe a complimentary glass of wine for anyway who purchases a program for the event.

Because people are paying to attend and paying for a program, is it possible that it would cancel out the fact the wine is complimentary and therefore we would be providing alcohol without a license?

I worked somewhere once that didn't have a license but gave us beer at a party on the premises.

Licencing laws are very very complicated and as a result of that i would respectfully advise you to see a solicitor.

As a Garda i would be inclinded to say yes, you need a licence to permit intoxicating liquor to be supplied on your premises.

In the market in Meeting place square in Dublin, There's a stand that sells mulled apple juice. They give you a small measure of whiskey in it if yo want, it's no extra cost, so they are charging you for one thing and giving you free drink also....

In other words, you're having a 'reception'; ask the gardai or a solicitor if you want, but hell, my local bank used to give all the customers a glass of whiskey on Christmas Eve up until a number of years ago. It wasn't stopped due to licensing concerns!
