Someone's sent me an m4v file and I'd like to put it on my iPhone, but iTunes refuses to load it because it isn't an mp4. What app can I use to make an mp4 version of the file?

    M4V is an MP4 (MPEG-4) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M4v

    iTunes should load it.

You can try Handbrake (http://handbrake.fr) to convert it if necessary

I think it became VisualHub which has also ceased to be :(

yeah visual hub had a lot more features and you had to pay for it. i have it and its one of the best video converters out there. whereas iSquint was only for converting to ipods/iphones

Hmm, strange error. I've now saved the file as an MPEG-4 (mp4) file, and imported it into iTunes.

But iTunes insists that it's music, and won't play the visuals (the son wishing me a happy birthday...) and so I still can't put it on the iPhone. The mp4 version plays fine in QuickTime on the Mac.

I see the 'video dimensions' are listed as 0x0 on the iTunes 'Get Info' dialogue.

Pfft, now it's playing (as an mp4) on iTunes, but it still won't import it on the phone because it 'can't be played on this iPhone'.

    thats mad....

i use isquint and i have it set to h.264 and quality bar in the middle and that makes files that play fine in iTunes & on my iPhone

As I've already said M4V is an MPEG-4 Video file so iTunes properly recognises it. MP4 is a standard music extension (for iTunes).
Either return to the file which had the M4V extension or use MetaX (http://www.kerstetter.net/page53/page54/page54.html) or similar to set the container properties to "movie" so that iTunes will recognise and sort it.

Depending on the codec used, the movie dimensions etc the video may not play on the iPhone/iPod. You may have to re-encode it (e.g. using Handbrake)

you can have video .mp4s as well. i have tons of them that all play in itunes and on any ipod/iphone i put them on

I've downloaded MetaX but can't see any reference to 'iPhone' in it. I tried choosing the tag 'movie' and hitting 'write' but it made no difference to the phone's desire to digest the file.

Tried Handbrake, clicking the 'iPod 5G Support' option, but no, that didn't work either.

Tried Handbrake again, choosing the preset for iPhone/iPod Touch, but no...

Tried Handbrake another time, having reloaded the original file from its flash drive, and I got all excited when it loaded onto the iPhone - but all that played was the first two seconds.

Finally got Handbrake working. Mad method. You browse to the file (in this case "Happy birthday") and it lists the path and name of the file (in this case "Users/Luckat/Desktop/Happy birthday.m4v") in the Destination field of its dialogue box.

Then - get this - you *edit the Destination field*, changing the name of the file if you want, to what you want. So let's say you've created a folder called Test on the desktop to hold trials of this movie, you edit the field to say "Users/Luckat/Desktop/Test/Happy birthday test.m4v".

You set the type of file (using the Toggle Presets button on the top right of the dialogue box) to iPhone / iPod Touch. Then you press the Start button on the dialogue box.

This works. But what a kludge.

Ah, you were trying to convert from m4v to m4v.

The destination field is usually populated by the full name of the file + new extension (e.g. WizZard.m4v ->WizZard.mp4).

So converting from m4v to m4v would have had that issue :( Glad you got it worked out though
