Cable / Satellite TV Research

I am considering entering the Cable and Satellite TV market - through the legal route, before anyone asks!!

I want to do a bit of research before I start.

Can you all tell me how many different types of systems are out on the market. Can you tell me the spec of each system such as what hardware is needed, what tv channels apply to each system etc?

I am essentially wondering if dodgy boxes will soon be a thing of the past, with people having no choice but to get a legit system instead for premium sports and movie channels.

    All comments are welcome.

    cheers

    Hi
you wanted to know about the tv cable /satellite systems are out there
1st you have sky and the channels will depend on which package you choose this is a totally satellite system ,signal beamed to dish on house to decoder in your house,
chorus/ntl has digital mmds, and digital cable depending where you live ,cable in the city and mmds in the country, but be advised the digital mmds system is not digital in the true sense of the word ,signal is beamed from a headend to your mmds ariel to the power supply box and then to the decoder, the channels once again depend on your package ,sky do not have itv in their line up you have to go to additonal channels and put in the code to recieve but it will not be in the line up when you go the the channel list this can be annoying ,both companies are around the same price per month ,but sky have more channels in teir basic line up ,sky charege for call outs if you have a problem, chorus /ntl call outs are free if the problem is with the equipment and not something you have done, you only rent the chorus/ntl equipment but you own the sky equipment, i have sky myself and find it very good ,but i have had chorus digital mmds also ,forgot to mention if your tv is more than 32 inches wide chorus /ntl system has a problem with tiling and freezing on the system as the signal is not compatible with big tv,s , so this is a consideration ,this might not be the kind of information you wanted but i hopes it helps you some bit

    what are you talking about?

Free Sat boxes? You either pay for sky or get a Freesat/Freeview box which gets you uk terrestrial channels for free obviously.

Smart and Magnet do via IPTV.

Magnet operate only in areas specifically wired with their fibre, newer developments mostly around Dublin.

Smart offer IPTV to their Fibre and LLU customers.

    Both offer premium channels.

Then there are one or two other smaller companies like Broadworks over cable.

This isn't really the place to start.

You can't supply hardware for ANY payTV operator in Ireland.

The only markets open to you to supply set boxes are Free to Air / Freesat Satellite and Shortly Free To Air Digital Terrestrial.

you only EVER could legally use an operator supplied set box for Premium services.

Good luck on trying to sell a setbox to Magnet, Smart, Homevision, Sky or UPC. You will end up getting fined up to €200,000 and possibly 6 months in jail if you try and sell set boxes direct to their pay TV customers for PayTV channels.

There are NO free cable channels.

There are free Satellite channels, but such a legal sale of set box can receive no pay TV from Sky and subscriptions for mainland European Pay TV (some of which can use a legitimate 3rd party set box) is a tiny market.
