I have a long lasting unusual obsession: every time I see a jet in the sky above me, I long to know where is it going and where has it come from. I look at it's trajectory in the sky, and try to guess where it might be going. Of course I understand that, for obvious security reasons, such info would not want to be made available (through some handheld gizmo or whatever), but has anyone any tips on how my curiousity might be satisfied?!

No big secret really just buy yourself a scanner. or listen to Live ATC here:http://www.liveatc.net/feedindex.php?type=international-eu
Scroll down and you will see Dublin/Shannon/Cork etc if its green then the Live feed is up.

For civil flights, there's no secrecy at all. www.kinetic-avionics.co.uk/sbs-1.php is what you want. This displays the transponder information for aircraft in range on your PC screen like a virtual radar. Very easy then to identify the aircraft, airline, flight number, origin and destination.

You could also have a look at http://www.airnavsystems.com/radarbox/ it works on the same principal of the Kinetic SBS-1
