€2.5K for a Luton/Box Van (Maybe from UK?)

To get something half decent you may need to spend a little more, do you only need it short term?
import a clean transit or merc Luton and you can sell it when you're finished ( maybe for a profit).
    Avoid the French vans.

Lutons make better money than box or panel vans. For 2.5k you are going old and at that age its difficult to find one that looks well too. The best value would be an old model Transit, up to 2000 but its very rare to find a good one. (I seem to remember you having some experience of old Transits). Even rough looking Sprinters or Transits of about 2002 will make €3.5k.
I went through this recently and ended up buying a 2005 VW LT35. My budget was €4000 and I had to extend this somewhat.

If its use involves foreign travel, be aware anything over 6.5 metres pays freight rates on the ferries.

Is it not possible to rent one?

This is not exactly pretty but you won't get a bigger loadspace for the money, it has transit mechanicals and it even has a tail lift. If resale is an issue, it might not be the best option.

Thanks for the replies so far :) I actually rang that one earlier but it's gone! I think it looks fine, is it just the boxy shape of the cab you think looks bad? It looks in great nick.

Resale isn't really an issue as I'd be hoping to keep it and get good use out of it.

No need to worry about freight rates as I'm hanging on to my panel van transit :)

I did indeed have trouble with the old style transit, and would really think twice before going back to one. My current transit is such an improvement over it, it's great, has given me hardly any trouble, nothing more than a few bob to fix when it has.

    Hi,
I need to find a luton with an internal floor length of at least 14ft. My budget is 2.5K and it's vital that it lasts me at least 5K miles without giving one ounce of trouble. Would consider buying in UK since it's only €50 to get Irish plates for commercial. It needs to be 3.5tn GVW (so drivable with B license). 2.5K is the budget, I may be able to stretch a little bit more though to cover getting irish reg/bringing it home etc.

    Perhaps something like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RENAULT-MASTER-LUTON-LWB-X-REG_W0QQitemZ170310585530QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Commercial_Trucks?hash=item170310585530&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

    or http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Transit-Luton-Van_W0QQitemZ260382056357QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Commercial_Trucks?hash=item260382056357&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318

Tail lift not necessary. Would prefer one that was in good aesthetic condition.

Any suggestions or advice on the above or any other leads appreciated :)

You do know that even brand new vehicles can die within the milage you want to get from a €2.5k van. They are all going to be worked to within an inch of their life and you'll have to look at a good few to find a good one.

Have you tried Broken n Stolen? There are a couple in their for €2.2k/3k and both are in Dublin

I'm gonna guess that he's refering to the Buy and sell!

Was just speaking to somebody there who said he thinks that if I bought a van from the UK, for say 2.5K sterling, and paid the 50 euro commercial VRT on it, that I would also have to pay VAT on the value of it marked by the irish revenue, so say for example Irish revenue said it was worth €5,000, I'd end up paying 2.5K sterling, 50 euro VRT + €900ish (21.5% of €5K).

Is this correct? He wasn't sure but said to check it out..

Yes and No. If you have a VAT No (Irish of course) you will only pay the €50 VRT . You will have to accoun for it in your VAR return, but then you will also claim it as an expense so it will be cash neutral. If you are an ordinary Joe, the you will have to pay full Irish VAT and possibly UK VAT as well.

I have an Irish vat number alright, so do I actually have to spend the 900 when I get the Irish reg and claim it back or are you saying I wont have to pay the 900 at all?

Can up the budget to about 3.5K now if anyone spots anything suitable (must be 13.6ft minimum, white and clean with no dents etc). Am I asking too much? Doesn't seem to be much over here compared with the UK :(
