Aux in conenction in car - only going through one speaker

I have an Alpine CDE- 9981R headunit in my car. has to be the cable. is it a 3.5 to 3.5 connection? ive had a few of those and many times, they can be crappy enough. my current one works better with one of the ends in particular plugged in the radio rather than the mp3 player, just one of those odd things.
