Hi guys, (Mods sorry if this is in the wrong place)

We are thinking about opening a new cycle/bmx/scrambler track and are trying to gage interest.

What do you think of 10 acres of dense forest, we will obviously have tracks made out (according to how you guys want it).

We are willing to put any amount of cash and effort in to make this an excellent site.

It is in Kildare (Near the Curragh military camp) and will be open fairly soon once we get some positive feedback.

Thanks for reading guys and sure drop a reply if you have any thoughts!

Maybe im generalising but most in here would be road cyclists. http://boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=168 might gain more interest. Best of luck

    Plenty of MTBers on here.

I'd love to give it a go. Gonna purchase a hardtail MTB very soon.

Personally I wouldn't wanna be anywhere near a scrambler though. Scourge of the countryside.

There would be seperate days for Bmx'ing and scrambling mate (or maybe not srambling at all)!

You gonna have some bikes available for rent?

Me and some mates are gonna go mountain biking some weekend but most wouldn't have appropriate bikes.

I vote for not at all; if they're on the same trails as for MTBs they'll wreck the place - parts of Three rock are destroyed cos of them

scramblers leave deep ruts due to their knobbly tires and hi rev count, this makes it very difficult to ride a MTB and definitely a BMX, sounds like a good plan though.

I'd be surprised if people would pay to use mtb trails, particularly when there are free coilte trails and then club specific trails

We could just leave the scramblers out and put them in a seperate part of the land I guess!

We've found that people will normally pay a small price as apposed to going to a free site when they are offered a proffesional alternative.

Although I could be wrong, at the end of the day I don't know much about the cycling community!

There will be large hills and the area is 10 acres, we will be putting a lot of money in it so a lot of the site will be teraformed by us!

Been said before, but just to underline that I think charging to use the trails is a bad idea -we've got some seriously good ones out there for free (ballyhoura and ballinastoe to name two), and so I think you'd cut right down on users if you'd to pay in. But, if you had a well stocked food and parts cabin, along with bike hire, I think you'd make a killing with people buying tyres/tubes/sweeties etc etc etc.

Also, you need plenty of parking! :D

The land itself is 21 acres so there would be ample parking. Again everyone thanks for all the input, you are all making this a lot easier!

word of advice, ask a few seasoned mtbrs to give you advice, don't make it too easy or too hard! happy medium with graded tracks! plenty of rocks, drops, off camber, northshore and switchbacks etc, if you don't know what these are you may be going down the wrong road!

Get in touch with the MTB commision of cycling Ireland. The head honch there, Sean, has been involved with setting up the coilte MTB centres, and with a downhill MTB centre on an area of land similar sized to yourself. He might be able to help steer you in the right direction (and he is a very experienced MTBer himself)

I used do a lot of xc around the curragh when i lived up there, happy days....

The army have a great little scrambling/driving course there, many a buckled wheel and brused knee...

Anyway more mtb trails in Ireland the better, the largest is Ballyhoura and was planned by a pro MTBer. They are like golf courses, they may look simple but are an art form so do your reserch before you spend a penney. As mentioned above B.houra charges €5 for parking (or €30 per season tic) more for showers, bike rental etc however there are PLENTY of free trails around the country.

Not to bore you but there are many different types of MTB (down hill, free ride etc and each demands different types of trail(and would be quite particular)). Each disipline also holds competitions which can attract media attention (red bull etc) so do a good, well researched trail and there are possibilities of different income threads there. MTB tourism is def on the up:D

Sorry for the rant but besides owning a surf shop, owning and running a trail really would be a great way to make a living and spend your days...

Whatever happens keep us posted. Best of luck with it:cool:

Thanks for that man, when we get this going we will be sure that is a great and well run site.

I had no idea there was such a strong cycling community in Ireland, nice to know we are not all lazy.

    Fair play.

Scramblers are treated like the plague, they would love to have a dedicated centre near Dublin/Wicklow and I would love to have their noisy machines away from Dublin/Wicklow and they might pay for it's use..
    Could be a win-win winner?

There's already a few good legal MTB trails but as far as I know (I know nothing about scrambling) scramblers have no centre.

Saying that the more MTB centres the better:D
