Pedestrians required to wear Hi-Vis Vests?

I think that there should be a legal requirement for pedestrians to wear a minimum of a hi-vis vest when walking in unlit areas. There is a requirement of other road users to make themselves visible. What do other people think

Ya, and beggars should be made ring a bell so you can avoid them.

Meh... it's mainly just a rural problem.

Get them to put flashing LEDs on their dungarees.

Just keep your nasal passages clear and you'll have plenty of warning.

I remember seeing kids in Germany or Scandinavia wearing little reflective yokes on strings hanging from their clothes during winter. Great for the visibility.

I think this health & safety sh1t has gone bonkers.

The other day I saw a big fat biker on a big fat Harley with all the whistles and bells. He would have been pretty cool only for the big id1ot high vis suit he was wearing. I laughed at him.

Most countryside walkers do wear vests anyway, those that don't are fools.

Unfortunately they also attract paedophiles. :(

Because paedophiles aren't actually attracted to children, but rather to bright shiny things? So if I, as an unattractive adult wear one, I'll find myself mobbed by paedophiles? What?

Agreed. Next little bastard I see bombing down a footpath expecting me to get out of his way is getting a wrestling style clothesline for his troubles.

Was there some mention of mandatory reflective stripes of school bags a few years ago also. Not sure what ever became of it though.

I dont see the need to legislate common sense.

No they can't see in the dark, usually the children could sneak by unseen but now they've got a reflector dangling from their arse, it's just asking for trouble.

I think pedestrians should wear inflatable armbands too, just in case & they should be forced to wear protective footwear in case a cow should walk in front of them. & all children under the age of 10 should be required to wear restraints in case they do something.... yada ****ing yada...

Ah, good point. Maybe we should issue children with reflectors that only emit light in wavelengths invisible to paedophiles?

I'll need 500 paedophiles for R&D, €2,000,000 for testing, a group of small children (or life size dummies) and a warehouse exceeding 150m in length. I'll get working on that straight away. If you could just post your bank details here I'll sort myself out without bothering you further.

Banks are the devil, will you accept cattle?

Are they paedophile cattle? Might help reduce costs if they are.

Getting back on topic, I believe there is already legislation in place about lighting bikes, yet cyclists rarely seem to find it necessary to illuminate themselves, preferring to play chicken with cars instead. I think those reflectors are a great idea, and am already looking to see where I can buy them (that isn't ebay), but I can't see it being law.

After I nearly ran some gob****e down one night (dressed in dark clothes walking on unlit road in the dark) I took to wearing a vest. Not an armband thing - they're rubbish - a proper sleeveless jacket type vest. Yellow it is. Of course the first time I used it some cnut nearly ran into me from staring at the shiny thing moving towards him

I'd say stick a post up on 4chan, you'll easily find 500 to take part in your study.

Better just to add paths in the sticks - like the rest of civilisation.

It seems to me that the dangers of walking in the dark along the road whilst wearing dark clothing should be pretty obvious. It also seems to me that the fact that the end result of an impact between a person and a car will likely not be in the favour of the person will also be fairly obvious.

Ergo, it shouldn't be something which should be legislated. Instead, it should just be left to Darwin.

    Eh... no.

People have done a good enough job of surviving so far without them.

I'm sick of all this legislative mollycoddling.

I think the facts show that for cases that have gone to court, where a pedestrian has been hit by a car, that the driver was shown to be in the wrong as he/she should be driving with due care and expect the unexpected. Several people have gotten into serious trouble and have been done for manslaughter.

That's why I think there should be a legal requirement put on pedestrians

They'd want to be warey of the traffic alright.

    (sorry.)

There should be heaps of High viz vests left over from the building trade. Some might even be able to pick up their own personal ones, ie " Murphy". "Paul" ETC :D

    This is quite true.

One would presume, however, that in the cases that have not gone to court, there was nothing to go to court for, and the driver was not particularly at fault.

In either case, however, the pedestrian in question has presumably not come out the better of the encounter. What solace is it to you if you are 'in the right' when you've had your leg lopped off by a vehicle?

Its a common sense really, although not for Ninjas.

It should be law though for cyclist and horse riders/drivers.

I dont think pedistrians can ware hi-viz vests without breakfast rolls and hardhats, but OP I do agree with you, I wear a hi-viz in bed, can't be too safe!!

Just a quick thought,as i live in the country where there are no street lights and no footpaths ,only a grass verge if you are lucky ,hi-vis vest or something similar could save your life ,the amount of times we have driven around a corner or up one of the side road only at the last minute to see some idiot in the headlights dressed totally in black walking along the middle of the road without a care in the world nearly giving me or my husband a heart attack not to mention the poor car

You'd be much safer if you wore a hi-viz life jacket - that would protect against rolling out of bed into a river as well.

    Better idea!
Hi-viz life jacket, with whistle and torch for attracting attention and a special pocket that generates breakfast rolls!

I'm like yourself (or was actually), I just learnt to slow down, it worked a treat.
