30% is hardly a huge restriction but added to the salary cap it should stem the tide a bit. It's no bad thing for the French either, just makes their already large playing pool a bit bigger.

I'd like to know how they stand legally on this as I thought you couldn't limit the amount of foreign players on a team once they are EU citizens

I'm not sure but haven't Platini and Co. got round that with the football. They plan to bring in similar measures around Europe soon i think.

i think the league can set its own rules, just like in the Scottish league in football all teams have to have a certain number of U21 players in their match day squads.

I thought they hadn't and hence my question but if they have gotten around it then it could be a goer

Platini reckons it'll survive the courts, others aren't so sure.

I'm sure all it will take is the usual threat of "European Super League" from the G14/16/21 and he'll be back in his box.

It'll be interesting to see how the French cope with this because no one loves taking a case to the European Courts like a disgruntled Frenchman.

EU Citizens aren't really the problem in France. Most teams have one or two Irish, Scots, Welsh or English, but the real problem is the rake of lads from the SH.

ANyway, rugby's not as important as football, so people won't mind a bit of discrimination.

It will be illegal to restrict players from the eurozone. The LNR can say what it likes in this respect, but the european courts will not tolerate it. SH players are a very different story.

The most interesting and progressive aspect of this announcement is the salary cap. That's been a long time coming and should rationalise the club game in france considerably, giving other less glamorous teams a chance to come through. It will also actively militate against the signing of big money overseas stars...
