The other night, I was up late and I started watching "Hostel" by Tarantino on Tv.
Well, I had to sleep with the light on that night.
I am not a fan of horrors but I found that film very well built up.

Although I am still wondering how could anybody come up with such an idea. You mustn't be too sane.

Hostel is actually by Eli Roth, Tarantino is only a producer.

The idea was based on an urban legend. I think one of the most effective things about the film is that it's just inside the realm of possibility.

Hostel seems to get a lot of stick but I thought it was quite an effective film.

It still amazes me how many people think its a Tarantino film though. Im an absolutely massive Tarantino fan but that still pisses me off no end.

Why do you think that?Comments like that annoy me.Just because a movie is violent then the maker must be insane.:rolleyes:What a crock of $hit and its only horror movies this claim is leveled at.Look at the most recent Rambo or Punisher movies, both exceptionally violent movies. It would appear its OK to kill hundreds on screen using guns but kill 4 or 5 using hand tools and its time for the men in white coats.Jesus wept.

Anyway,Hostel is an enjoyable movie, has an original plot idea and has some pretty damn cool special effects too.

It really is. I loved it, there's a great brooding sense of tension that so many horror films these days lack, and there's some great homage in there as well as some wickedly dark humour. The part where they're following the guy who has the same jacket as their friend is one of the highlights, great nod to Don't Look Now.

Meh. While I do agree, I wouldn't let it bother you. Violence is violence, be it Joe Pesci crushing someone's head in a vice or Jason lopping someone's head off, and if people want to think one kind is 'sick' and the other is acceptable, that's their brainfart.

It is funny the different attitudes to violence in more mainstream films versus independent or smaller budget films.

I went to see Bronson last week with a friend, its quite violent and I loved it (not for that reason) and he hated it....of course he starts calling me a freak because I would like something so violent yet we went to see Rambo last year and he thought it was the greatest thing he has ever seen.....he'd also be the very fella to talk about the vice grip scene in Casino:rolleyes:

The film "this film is not yet rated" talks about this a bit where it shows independent films get harsher treatment for the same subject matter than big studio films do.

Really loved that scene and agree that the film really worked well in building up the tension and feeling of isolation and helplessness

Reminds me of the feeling of some of the older sci fi and horror movies from America when the fear of communism bled into everything they did and there was a lot of tension and paranoia

Aye, I'm all for violence of all kinds, but the sheer hypocrisy surrounding it is ridiculous. I really do have to check out This Film is Not Yet Rated.

I cant be the only one who thought Hostel was a load of ****e?

Completely pointless, the plot is absolute nonsense. The central idea about Rich people paying to gruesomely kill their victims isn't bad but the way the built the film around this notion was so flimsy it's unreal.

I did like the tits though.

It's quite easy and normal imho. Just take a disturbing social concept and then put it on it's head. Hostel is basically a movie about prostitution where sex hungry men end up being the victims of the industry instead of indulging in it. It's the core reason why Hostel1 is brilliant and Hostel2 is a piece of sh1t.

Same idea happens in Alien which is essentially a movie about men getting raped and impregnated by a female rather than vice-versa.

A corneal transplant that results in being able to see ghosts?
A child that talks to dead people?
A monster that grows inside you and explodes through your chest?

    And as for

I like horror movies but this was just torture porn, hated it, could'nt watch it until the end, like the later SAW movies.

I hated it becuase Eli Roth was hyping it as the most insane horror movie ever when it well, wasnt. It was actually as dull as ditchwater for the most part, with 3 deeply unlikeable lead characters arsing around Europe, the second was awful as well

I did enjoy the first Hostel - it was something different (when released anyway - the ever increasing amount of ultra-violent torture movies has somewhat diluted its impact). After watching it for a second time on TV, I did think the first half (i.e. the 'character' and 'story' establishment, if you could call it that) is pretty awful - just trying to shove in as much sex and swearing as possible. But in a way the silly, badly written opening sets up the violence well, making the shift in tone very welcome. Its stupid, throwaway entertainment at the end of the day and it does that well - and moments such as the 'eye cutting' easily rank among the most blackly comic shock moments in Hollywood.

As for the sequel - like getting hit in the face repeatedly by a Germaine Greer book. Bollocks.

Is that why in the original concept art the alien had a big penis? Actually, the more you think about it those aliens are dirty buggers.

Hostel had its pluses and minuses for me. On one hand the special effects were great and it had many "Woah, I can't believe they just did that!" moments. It's nice to see films push the emvelope.
As has been said here before however, the main characters weren't at all likeable, deminishing the effect of their grusome fates on the viewer. Some of the acting was also seriously dodge at times.
Also, the moral of the story:
Boys love candy and will do anything for it
    . Interprate freely.

"You will spend, all your money, in that place"
    - Takashi miike (credited as playing himself disturbingly enough)
