Because you've had the console opened, not only would GameStop not take it in but MS will not offer you any further warranty regardless of the issue.

Since MS offer a free two-week service to repair RROD, why did you get someone else to repair it and ruin any future warranty?

Whether it's had the RROD or not, is not the issue. The issue is that the console has been "tampered with" by someone other than MS. That voids any future warranty. That means all future repairs to the console will have to be paid for out of the owners pocket.

The guys in Gamestop would have known that they could get MS to fix your mates console for free and have it back in approximately two weeks and still have it covered under extended warranty for the next owner. Therefore they were willing to give him full trade-in value.
