It's great in theory but not practice, but maybe that depends on the course you are doing. i did childcare.
I went back as a mature student, my course was 4 days and one day work experience. classes constantly been cancelled no notification from tutors, the worse was the course director! 4 weeks in a row didnt turn up for a double class in a subject that was the hardest and we had a 2 hr written exam coming up. This course director even walked past the class one day as we all sat in there waiting on her to come in and didnt even have the manners to tell us she wouldnt be attending! when i highlighted it to the principal I got told off for jepordising her position as I made a complaint that will go down on her record! She did improve for a while but near the end we had to have extra classes as we were behind and not prepared enough for the exam. i have spoken to people who are doing the course this year and the same thing is going on.
I went to a different institute to do my second year as I found the set up there very frustrating, and so did a few others on my course.
You can use the facilities in the IT, library, gym, canteen etc.
sorry to be so negative but its worth checking out some of the secondary schools around the county and see what FETAC course they run and check out the set up.

what kind of security are you looking to get into?

If you want to do security i'd look into joining one of the big agencies like Sword Security and they can put you on courses for the likes of store security, doorman licences and bodyguard licences

If you want to get into door security, apply for a PSA licence. it's done over a weekend and i think it costs around €300 (been a while since i applied :)). Thats pretty much all you need to work doors.

    Best of Luck :D

Sorry but have to correct you on that one, while the Institute of Technology and the Institute of Further Education are beside each other, they do not "share" grounds.

Students from the Institute of Further Education are not allowed to use the Library, Gym or the Carpark. They have there own facilities, albeit not great ones but they are meant to use their own. The canteen is for staff and students of Carlow IT. What would the students (and staff) from the Institute of Further Education do if the college turned them away??

Not having a go at you in any way, shape or form but it's not the first time students from the Institute of Further Education have been misinformed by teachers, tutors and sometimes higher!!!!!!! They need to sort out their own facilities to accomodate their own students!!!
