'Smart' cards

Stupid, stupid me. I was rejoicing at Dublin Bus finally moving to smart cards, and went to buy one for my bus journey, intending to load it up with some money and use it for future journeys.

In my naiveté, I assumed that Dublin Bus's version would be the same as, say, the Suica in Japan, where you load your card, then each journey debits it.

How silly I am. Far too simple a concept for Dublin Bus.

So the card needs a payment each time to travel? Why bring in the card then?

If these cards ever got 'too' smart is there a danger they could enslave all mankind?

Not the way they should. They thought the proper way would be too hard core for us to handle straight away. But the system can handle it so they may eventually make it work the way it should.

In case the OP was being serious:
DB have the technology to roll this out but the Department of Transport are really, really, REALLY bad at approving damn near anything new or exciting.
They're still holding out for their integrated ticketing thing through the RPA (Luas people), but last I heard it was due for rollout in 2006 so christ knows when we'll actually get it.

The current system means I pay half the price I normally would going to and from college every day.

Naturally Dublin Bus would be unwise to change it.

I always found the suspension on Dublin buses to be quite forgiving.

Who needs a smart card when your mate pays on then legs it down the back to open the emergency exit and every one melee's on.

    Ah, how I miss school.

Obviously, just the card is smart in this case.

They're not 'smart' cards at all. They're a renamed version of the five-day, monthly, etc tickets.

The two-journey tickets (which replaced the more efficient 10-journey tickets) have ceased to be.

The shop said they were flooded with people looking for change for the bus, and kindly gave me €1.60 in coppers to pay my fare.
