Is there a difference between the two ? I know that baking soda and baking powder are different, but where does soda bread mix come into it ?

Soda bread mix will usually contain flour, dehydrated buttermilk (or something), salt and baking soda, then you just add water/milk (depending on what it says on the pack).

Baking soda is just baking soda.

For anyone that's interested, here's the recipe I use.

    170g plain flour - ish
170g self raising flour - ish
    300ml buttermilk - ish
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda - ish
    1/2 teaspoon salt - ish

middle shelf of the oven at 200c for about 25-30 mins

    Yum!
