Advice on buying a trade deal

I'm looking to buy a car from a dealer on a trade deal, i.e. no warranty etc. It's a great price but I'm wondering what to check for before I hand over the cash. I'll do one of those car checks on the finance and owner history of course first but how about the mechanical side, do you think it normal practice to bring it to a mechanic of my choice to check it out first?

Any hints would be much appreciated.

If your not too mechanicly minded you should most certainly bring someone who is, i recently bought a car with no warranty and saved me a fortune but then it really depends on the value of the car your buying???? What make??? etc. Get a good overall check done before hand and you should be a1

Bring a mechanic with you, some one you can rely on. Should be the easiest way out. How good of a deal is it?

It's a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe with about 85K miles on it.

The deal seems pretty good, several k cheaper than similar models from dealers.

Check is it still covered by a manufacturers one though. Still might be some left to run

I could be mistaken but i'm sure Hyundai had a 3 years or 100,000 kilometre warranty on these !!Which ever came first. Is it a main dealer your buying from ? If so are they not supposed to give a warranty legally trade sales would generally be to the TRADE only

Also check that it has FSH from Hyundai, otherwise any remaining warranty will be void. To be honest, I would never advise anyone who doesn't know cars well to buy trade. Have you checked out private sales?

    85k miles or kilometers ?

As a rough rule of thumb, back off the price by 1k for every 10k miles. 06, so avg around 40k miles ? Back off 4500 on the price to allow for the extra mileage, and then see how it compares with other prices. If you still think it's cheap then check it out !

Garage could be on sticky ground here. I understood a garage was legally obliged to give a warranty unless selling to an actual dealer. To get around that they could possibly sell it to you as in need of repair and make you tow it away from their premises.

Is it a passenger or commercial model ? Rules for providing warranty not the same for cars as vans AFAIK.

A trade sale can be made to a member of the public. If there's no warranty offered and it's cheap there's most likely a good reason for this.

You OP are clearly not what would be regarded as in the trade.ie a mechanic, car dealer, panelbeater etc. So a trade sale order form signed by a retail customer swayed by an attractive price is a grey area with regard a future dispute.
A dealer selling in this manner should be insisting your independent expert sign the trade sale order form to cover their arse with regards comeback.
if the vehicle is in good order and the dealer is simply overstocked with similar vehicles(they may not fancy prep costs and the wait for a retail sale)dont be afraid to go ahead. Its certainly no worse than the private sale lottery or the uk import with no comeback any way.
    all the best

Aye, but the order form could just be signed "No warrenty given or implied" and initials put next to it as per normal with any warranty.

any one can buy them, they are trade only for a reason, if you need an education on buying used cars, you are going the right way about it.

    +1

You're obviously not in the trade. Do you know the dealer somehow? Is there more to the relationship than we know?

If not, then be careful. I don't know why a dealer would offer to sell a perfectly sale-able vehicle to a private punter as a trade sale. It doesn't make sense to me.

As said above, it could be a stocking issue and they just want rid of it, but I don't understand why the dealer would open the can of worms associated with doing a trade sale to a private punter (and all the legal implications of that transaction), rather than just selling the vehicle to a proper trader!

Satisfy yourself that you have absolutely no doubts or grey areas with regards to this deal, or walk away. Don't be swayed by how nice the vehicle is or how good the price is. You should understand why the dealer is willing to sell this to you trade.

    To answer a few questions:
It's got no warranty, and the dealer ain't giving me one. The service history isn't from a main dealer.

I've checked out private sales, but this is cheaper and I'm in the same boat if it's a lemon. No come back with a private sale.

    It's 85k Miles and a commercial model.

The salesman is a relation of a colleague of mine, that's how I heard about it. My colleague knew I was looking for a car and the salesman mentioned to him he had a Santa Fe coming in for a good price.

I'm going to try and get a mechanic now, if anyone knows one willing to pop out to the dealer with me for a few quid please post!

I bought it anyway, paid 6000eur but got to do the timing belt myself. Got my fingers crossed that's all I'll need to do:-) I had a mechanic check it out first. Good value at 30eur for the piece of mind. Name's Dave, and he does callouts etc. ph. 086-1955342.
