If you are on the dole, are you allowed to do a part time course in the evening times to keep yourself occupied?

Yep, provided you're available for work during the days it's fine.
Contact FAS as you might be eligable for a grant towards the costs of the evening course if it's a proper qualification (i.e. not wine tasting or cookery but something with exams etc like a business diploma etc).
I think the max grant is about 800 a year towards the cost of the course.

You might want to look at the FAS website as they run all sorts of classes which are usually free if you are looking for work.

free if you are receiving a social welfare payment. If you're only signing on for credits, you're sol.

For €800 per year you can do a degree course, Bsc (Hons) Crime & Criminology by distance with the University of Portsmouth. It'll keep you occupied for 4.5 years, things should start to look up for the economy by then, well, ok I am being optomistic....:) You can also exit early with a certificate or diploma or ordinary degree (without doing a thesis)

I do it and it is the cheapest, from what I have seen, approved and recognised degree by distance out there, anywhere.

There are no final exams, you submit a number of essays each academic year, it is continuous assesment. Here's the link:

Do you know who to ask for/ speak to in relation to this? I can't find anything about it on the website. My unemployed boyfriend is doing a business course in a private college and has used his savings to fund it. It's a 2 year course so not fully paid for yet. I would send him to ask about this but in my own previous experience of FAS the person at reception only knows the answer if it's about an apprenticeship. I can imagine getting a strange look for asking about a grant for an evening course.

I emailed FAS about this two weeks ago and received no response!
