if you dont have a decent pc/ sound card yeah id def reccomend them. especcially for beginners. simple presets for all instruments. and simple recording and mixing once you read the manual. cant stress that enough with the boss br900 read the manual. no need to go to ebay for that price they're on adverts.ie for prob same price or cheaper. look in the instruments and pro audio sections.

I used to have a the Zoom 16 track equivalent, and as you would expect there are some great plus points and some minus points..

The plusses were , it was simple to use and nice and portable. I used it for about a year or so and was very happy with it..

Until I was in a commercial studio and was playing around with Logic.. Then it became really obvious the advantages of being able to cut/paste sections of tracks around on a PC/Mac was incredible compared to attempting to edit tracks on a 50 char (or whatever) LCD screen.
Suddenly in seconds I could a 2 sec bass line i liked in Logic/Cubase and copy it out to 2 mins, drop new pieces in and out.. something that was very painful to do on the Zoom machine. For that reason and that reason alone i sold the Zoom machine..

I still think the Zoom/Boss standalone units are great though.. great portability, great for recording practice etc..
