If you have Logmein installed on a particular machine & it connects to the Internet, it is very easy to display it's WAN IP (outside IP).

Is it possible for the authorities to trace that IP to a location in the event that particular machine was stolen?

IP -> location translation only involves contacting the ISP.

There is available software/hardware that will locate your machine for you (provided certain conditions apply).

    For example see:

You would imagine so, but remember that the IP would be that of either the thief or the recipient of stolen property & not yours. If you could identify the ISP from the IP address they would more than likely refuse to divulge any information to you & the police just wouldn't have the time to even bother me thinks.

I wonder how these companies can acquire the address location?

It unlikely that they would have an agreement with every ISP provider....
