Curling hair - rollers?

Now that my hair is growing longer I want to start curling it for going out/weddings etc.

I've tried doing this with a ghd and with a curling tongs, but it's just a mess and wont work.

Anyone know what heated rollers are like? And any reccommendations of a make?

I have very thick, shoulder length hair.

    Thanks!

    Hiya,

Can I ask what you found bad about curling tongs? Did you try a few? Because I have thick hair just passed my shoulders and I have just found a fantastic curling tongs for under 30euro which makes really neat long lasting curls in my hair, it's a miracle! :)

I have tried straighteners, rollers and tongs in the past and found tongs to be the best once you get used to them, rollers got stuck in my hair, not fun

once you learn how to do it with the GHD, it's so easy... It's the only way curls will stay in my hair for more than an hour!!! Rollers tend to give messy curls and I find that the ends never curl properly and you end up with a striaght root, curly middle and straight ends - not a good look! I also find that curlers don't get hot enough...

Have a look on youtube for GHD curl tutorials (the official GHD one is good)

Spadina, can you give the brand of your tongs and/or where you bought them? Am in the market for new curling tongs, my last decent pair died and the one I bought recently (admittedly a cheapo job) were cr@p.

I have used heated rollers & tongs & I would go for the tongs - much easier in my opinion. Now, it might take a couple of times to get it right but once you do, you will be sorted.

Spadina, yeah if it's cr@p we'll come and hunt you down and tong you to death ;)

Alicia Angel, you got me thinking now!!! Never would have dreamt of getting a perm, but looking at pics of bodywaves they look exactly how I *want* my hair to curl (but often fail to do so, and spend bloody ages in the effort).

Sorry to hijack this thread a bit, but can I ask you
    (a) how is the condition of your hair afterwards? (i'd imagined it would be frazzled, 80s-perm style)
    (b) how thick is your hair? Mine is pretty fine, I like curls to add body but don't know if it would have enough natural volume to 'take' a body wave...?
    (c) how much did you pay? and lastly
    (d) what's the 'upkeep' on it, i.e. how long before you'll have flat roots? And when that happens, how can you make it look nice again, can you just re-wave the roots like a dye touch-up or do you wave the whole head of hair again?

    Cheers!

Can you recommend a product to keep the curls in place??

ooh on the same page as camilla ....always been curiously terrified of a perm ????

I have long thick hair and always curl with a good tongs ( find a medium sized barrel is best )! i section my hair off and after every few bits i use hairspray ....when it's done i give a few mins to settle then gently run a wide combed brush through ( and i stress gently) to take the 'hairdresser curls' look off it - more flowy/natural! then a tad more spray to finish - generally lasts the night !!! I find the silvakrin ( spelling ???) the best for curls....anything else and they fall out in an hour!

Tongs are a pain in the ass. Get some of those new 'curling wands'. Babyliss do one. They produce really nice waves and curls.
