With all these flatscreens about now, hows the best way to clean them? Are all LCD screens the same (Some are sort of matt finish & some shiny)? A few of my screens now are getting dirty. Ive seen proper LCD cleaners out there, but wondering if they are really worth the money?

The screen surface is plastic, so stuff for cleaning windows is a no-no

stuff for cleaning spectacles should be ok since they are plastic too, you know the wipes

pure water is good , but damp cloth, any liquid spills WILL probably kill your keyboard / screen /laptop

used to work for sony tech support and the best stuff to use is definatly water. Had more calls from people who used "special" lcd screen cleaner. ruins the screen and voids the warrenty to boot.

Just make sure you ALWAYS do like Capt'n Midnight said and NEVER spray the actual screen with anything. It can and probably will drip down and cause damage to the computer.

I have seen people do this with window cleaner before and spray enough cleaner on there to clean a ten foot window. This is an exceptionally bad practice.

On a slightly unrelated note, I just bought a new laptop with a really nice LCD screen and of course the same day I bought it, one of my clients felt the need to touch the screen to show me something. Drove me bonkers!

Yes they certainly attract fingerprints! Thats what i need to get rid of. Would water be enough though to remove greasy like smudged fingerprints?

Aldi/Lidl/PC world/... often has screen wipes for sale.
I just use a slightly damp kitchen towel.

Only wipe when computer is off, this also makes the dirt easier to see.
You can also leave it off for a while to make sure all moisture has evaporated before turning it on again.

I use one of those microfibre cloths that I used for cleaning my glasses.

If you're cheap. Newspaper and beer.

Seriously. Less streaks than a spong thing I have that's supposed to be ascreen cleaner.

    Pure Gasoline!

depending on the model theres usually nothing for there to get leaked on to, liquid will just drain along the bevel/hinge until it drips off the back on mine. I suppose if there was a load of fluid it might get intot the screen inverter, but that would be unlikely.

Anywho I clean mine normally with a dry microfibre cloth. you can wet the cloth with a drop of water too for tough spots. doesnt scratch. Got some monster brand cleaning fluid from xmas that works good too. Considering the bottle lasts forever its not a terrible buy im ashamed to admit. But definitely get yourself a microfibre cloth. very handy material to keep around the house.

I use a microfibre cloth with a little bit of windolene sprayed on it. Works great and have never had any problems. Screen wipe things seem a waste of money - the screens are only a sheet of plastic.

    Gasoline isn't pure.
When they used to add Lead to it they also added Hydrochloric Acid to remove excess lead. Petrol is full of carcinogens and other nasties and additives to make it more wonderfuller.

If you must use an organic solvent then get some isopropyl alcohol from a pharmacy. Not really that good for laptop screens though.
