Up to 24 mbits presumes you are actuallly on an ADSL2 exchange . Here is a list of those exchanges which is around a month old and does not include recently released exchanges .

Generally you must be on a big or on a very small exchange to get 'up to' 24 mbits , indeed anything over 7.6mbits seeing as there is an up to 12mbits and up to 10mbits as well.

Here is a fairly recent list of these exchanges although a few more have been done since this was checked . Middle size exchanges do not have

Are they offering this to consumers yet or is it only a wholesale product?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 25,234 ✭✭✭✭Sponge Bob

It will be up to the retail operators to offer this . None have announced it yet ...that I know of .

This will require a very complex analysis of current pricing for every operator I should think . The lead time on eircom trunks to hand over data off the bitstream service is around 3 months for starters.

BT offer 24mbit Business broadband , where available, for €40 a month ex vat .......

This product puts it right up to BT @ €39 wholesale .

Wohoo my exchange is listed. That at least is the first hurdle... Now need to get ISPs to offer upgrades...

So is this just an attempt to make LLU unprofitable while making bitsteam more appealing?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 25,234 ✭✭✭✭Sponge Bob

    Quite simply

BT have offered Business Broadband 24mbits for €40 a month ex vat from some exchanges in Dublin and Limerick

Eircom launch this @ €38.50 meaning that BT would have a margin of 3.9% if they offered it to their business customers on non LLU exchanges .

Out of that 3.9% they must pay for backhaul etc . I do not think that anyone will offer it at much under €100 TBH but lets see if I am proven wrong on that .

The industry morkeshing droids will be in meetings from now till good friday I should think.

I think I have already posted this on an older thread but as this one is exclusive to it I just want to make clear that those 38 euro does NOT include line rental.

It is still very expensive for res customers as the price will go over 100 euro per month, maybe ISPs will consider introducing this to their business customers but not for residential I am afraid... we shall wait and see...

Oh and one last thing, this is not LLU2 but Bitstream

There's no such thing as LLU2. It most probably will be bitstream, bitsteam is when they resell their packages to other operators. Whether it is ADSL, or ADSL 2+, it is still bitstream.

LLU2 or if you want, you can call it LLU, is just the second phase
As I have said it will be bitstream

I misread, I thought you said it was not bitsream.

No a bother, it is good to see Eircom making these products available. I am sure that it will be a matter of time for them to lower the prices, we have to remain positive!

These are the business packages of today and tomorrow .

12mbits is now €78 wholesale and €169 retail ( ex vat)
up to 10 mbits is now €45 wholesale and €89 retail ( ex vat)

    The new packages are

24mbits is €38.50 wholesale , half what the 12 mbit was . This points to a an €89 package retail but more likely €99

12 mbits/up to 12 mbits is also €38.50 wholesale which points to around €69 retail

I can see them abolishing 1mbit Business and replacing with an 'up to' 3mbit entry level @ €21-25 retail and up to 7.6mbit around €39 retail

This gives you a business package lineup of all 'up to' packages

    up to 3 - 21 or 22
    up to 7.6 - 39
    up to 12 - 69
    up to 24 - 99

within a few months and everyone else following suit by and large .

any chances of Eircom upgrading many existing dsl exchanges including my one which is not yet ADSL2+, seems a bit unfair that there are tiny exchanges with ADSL2+ and many medium sized exchanges with just plain old adsl1??

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 25,234 ✭✭✭✭Sponge Bob

    It is perfectly fair Gonzo.

However some 400 odd exchanges in small-medium towns and villages that got DSL pre 2008 appear not to be scheduled for an ADSL2 upgrade right now .

They will remain stuck at 8Mbits max for some time .

Eircom will launch a new 24MB/1MB product for it's retail customers called Eircom Advanced. It's due to be launched towards the end of the month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,717 ✭✭✭Praetorian

I'm surprised but happy they went straight to 24. I'm sure if Eircom had their way they would have gotten a few more speed bumps out of adsl 2 tech. Good pressure from the likes of NTL, Smart, BT and of course Magnet!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,075 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

more needs to be done tho, loads of exchanges still no sign of adsl2+ on them, eircom needs to put adsl2+ in all exchanges and upgrade the 7.6meg customers to 8meg adsl2+ and lower that awfull interleving back to normal values so all get decent pings again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,717 ✭✭✭Praetorian

Expensive equipment, and so many tiny exchanges where it's not worth investing lots of money. I don't know what the solution is going to be! Also, don't get too excited about brilliant ping times with Eircom and ADSL2+. The current story is that they cannot change interleaving settings on their 10 or 12 m/bit packages, so maybe they won't change interleaving settings on any ADSL2+ packages.

Does anyone know if ADSL 2+ tech is prone to higher pings than ADSL 1 tech?

    Current adsl2 pings,

I too have the 12Mb adsl2+ package and my pings are identical to yours. Just checked my other 3Mb line which is giving me pings of 3ms more, so considering interleaving is turned up high on business packages, the adsl2+ line still gives better pings than the adsl line with higher interleaving settings.

Technology performs more or less the same - more parameters with 2+ such as interleaving, which can lead to higher pings but this is physics, not technology.

Eircom finally launched themselves package lineup here

    http://business.eircom.net/broadband/packages/

    24/1 is €99 a month ( ex vat )
    12/2 is €99 a month ( ex vat )
    12/1 is €65 a month ( ex vat )

And the pricing is more or less what I said it would be :)

I presume that is ex Line rental as well as ex VAT.

of course . Including line rental and vat you would be stung for about €150 a month for 24/1 but it is quite low contention.

By the way the 12/1 12/2 and 24/1 are all uncapped . To think that eircom started offering about 512k for over €100 a month ex vat 6 years ago ...and that was capped at about 2gb .

    tiny bit off the subject..but

at the start of the 7 meg package the pings were terrible..

    im on 3 meg..pings 30-50ms..

have eircom sorted the ping problem out with 7meg package?(eircom DSL).

    Thanks.

    2 Things

    1. The 7.6package had the ping problems therefore the 7 was introduced as a free 'downgrade' if you are on an ADSL1 exchange which still means most exchanges and all small town exchanges upgraded mid decade . The 7 has better pings but not as good as 3mbits I believe .

    2. Smart have just lauched the 24 mbit ADSL2 package off eircom exchanges ...not their own. As yet we have no idea whether this package ( where available) fixes ping problems because very few have it . It looks like it will come in just above the eircom 7.6 price . In addition there is an ADSL 2 12/1 package in between them . The fact that these are ADSL2 is grounds for hope but it depends on how eircom implements profiles in the end

24mbit €72 inc line rental and Vat
12mbit €62 inc line rental and Vat

In conclusion, wait a few weeks for comparative data and see if your exchange has ADSL2 in the list above.

Are all new exchanges being enabled ADSL2 or are eircom being selective about it?

I think the earlier enabled exchanges (about 700) have only ADSL kit and the more recent 300 ish exchanges have ADSL2

So Ironically you may get 7Mbps max somewhere in the 5 main cities and 24Mbps close to exchange in a village.

But what is needed is NOT more speed for the top 10% of users, nice as it is, but more affordable entry level Broadband including line rental. If someone doesn't need a phone line (maybe 1/2 the population and about 1/3rd don't have one already), then it's over €50 a month to have BB at all on DSL.

I agree with you that line rental price is crazy...nuts...insane....

But you can get loads of line rental and DSL packages for closer to €40, not €50.

Naked DSL would make lots of sense...
