Got pulled the other morning for being on mobile. Guard informed me i would be penalised 2 points and also 60 euro fine. However he did not issue me anything in writing (e.g a ticket). Just wondering is this the correct procedure or does it matter - he has my licence no., name and address and drivers license details?
should i go to station and pay fine now or wait until i get a letter in post (if that is what is going to happen).
    thanks

You can't pay a fine you haven't received. Wait for the post.

Nothing is given to the "offender" on the roadside.

At the end of the day, someone, thinking outside the box, decided this was a good idea, going forward.:D

Possibly the most annoying phrase at the moment!

Yes, leaving people confused and unclear as to what they've actually been done for, if anything at all, what penalty they might expect, and no idea of the process thereafter and how long it's going to take (as clearly demonstrated by the sheer number of posts like this on here) is clearly going to go a long way to improving "customer satisfaction" with the Gardai (not).

Maybe we could get the gardai a set of little postit pads with "You've been done for a 2 point, €60 euro thing, you'll get a letter soon, sit tight til then" preprinted on them, and they could just slap them on the windscreen?

you will received a letter in a few days. 28 days to pay, if you fail then fine goes up and you have another 28 days to pay, if you fail to pay again summonsed to court. you send the payment and filled out form back to the address on the letter you receive.

don't go to your garda station, they can't accept money for a fine.

    hope this clears it up.

You're preaching to the choir. Do people only recognise sarcasm if there's an appropriate smiley attached to it?

As an aside, if someone is capable of driving a car, surely they're capable of talking to the guard (most of whom have a reasonable grasp of plain english) and asking what penalty they might expect? Doesn't excuse the fact that nothing is handed over on the roadside, though, but that's not the guards fault - we don't make up the rules.

You should get a letter from them in a few weeks. I'd say the fine will be €80, not €60, I could be wrong though. You can pay the fine in any Post Office.

    Orly?

Not in my recent experience. Post office staff were clueless as what to do. Ended up sending off a cheque instead to pay the ticket.

Yeah, should be able to pay at the post office alright.

You should be able to pay in any post office but in some cases the staff don't have the training to deal with it.

Staff in the PO should simply scan the barcode at the end of the fine. Pops up on screen. Just like paying a bill!
