    Hey,

Just checked and the newest PS3 firmware 2.70 has been released and it looks like a massive update. I have been waiting for this for over a month now and the hole firmware looks interesting heres the info:

    Friends List:
    • Voice Messaging is now available as an alternative to text after selecting a user on the friends list. Voice message recordings are capped at 30 seconds.
    • Home Integration: Saved Playstation Home avatar photos can be selected as photo ID for Gamer Card/Friends List.
    • Trophy number and Gamer Level are listed under Friend names for quick reference.

    Gamer Card & Trophies:
    • Gamer Card layout has been changed to more closely resemble the Playstation Store aesthetic.
    • Past Trophy information can be viewed in detail by selecting "Recent Trophy History" option.
    • Newly aquired trophies auto-sync in the background
    • Server infrastructure for Trophies has been optimized. Resulting in faster retrieval time for Gamer Card and Trophy information.

    In-Game XMB:
    • Loading time for In-Game XMB has been drastically reduced, resulting in a more seemless in-game experience.
    • "Theme settings" options while in-game is now available, allowing custom themes to be applied to the In-Game XMB.
    • Internet Browser can now be accessed while in-game.
    • Voice messaging and voice chat options can be used while in-game.
    • Options that cannot be used in the XMB during game sessions are grayed out (but still selectable) to eliminate user accessibility confusion.

    Misc:
    • Other slight UI tweaks and enhancements.

Being able to access the Internet Browser while in-game will come in handy but tbh nothing else looks that amazing. Why didnt sony just announce this at their 'big press relese' on tuesday, would've avoided disapointing quite a few fanboys.

Your a bit late with the April's Fools joke.
2.70FW was releases this morning but its nowhere near as good as that list.

The only good feature is 16-way text chat which will be useful in clan matches and the like.
Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.

In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

    * Sort your friends via their online status
    * Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store

    * Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
    * Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

Yeah not sure where Warzone got that from.

    Very disappointing tbh.

EDIT: I would actually go as far as to say that not one of those features is of any use to me. I only go onto the US PS blog site to read the comments when firmware is released but what they release does seem to be nothing like what is being asked for. I don't mean unrealistic stuff like a BC software download (is it even possible?) or mkv but cross game voice chat or even something simple like not having the battery block the clock.

I feel like this update is to tide people over until the next big firmware update. Like maybe they're working on cross game voice chat and have added cross game text chat to keep some people happy until then? Sony always seem to have one or two really big firmware updates each year for the PS3 (like in-game XMB last year) so maybe they're still working on some of the good stuff and will release it later this year?

I like the idea of 16-way text chat, I think I prefer typing than voice chatting over the PS3 anyways. You're right though noodler, you'd think that they would have sorted out the battery meter blocking the clock by now!

Lol, have to agree, its petty but it is quite irritating. i'm amazed its never been changed so long as i have my ps3, im sure it would be such an easy thing to do as well :)

Overall im *happier* with this update than i was with the last update which we got ... eh ... a... photo gallery?! wtf lol !!

Wow everything I have read up on till now with the 2.70 update was class and now it seems like it's just another useless update. I heard the trophies would be listed under names and all that. Damn I am very disappointed now

Well where did you copy and paste your OP from? Were you tricked?

I don't get that at all, it took me less than 15 minutes. Why are people on higher speeds than me having such a problem d/ling from PSN?

Remember the KZ2 demo, took m an hour, people were saying it took all night.

    EDIT: I blame wireless.

Some stealth updates in the FW:
    - Copy/Paste in Browser.
    - Internet Search function in the options for games (while in XMB).
    - Inviting friends show online friends first.
    - Trophies now updating faster.
    - Comparing trophies now shows - instead of 0% if the other person doesn't own the game.
    - Browser faster and has less 'stalls'.
    - PS Store has scrollbars for the popular and new content lists.
    - Text chat does display on the screen when you're playing the game, in the form of bubbles.
    - More usability tips on features in the XMB.
    - Themes arranged alphabetically.
    - Joost now works.
    - Dynamic Normalizer for music

Thanks ong, where'd you gleam that from?

Am I right in thinking the copy and past feature only lets you copy a web address?

    What is Joost?

If it takes you that long to download the firmware update on your PS3 why don't you just download it from eu.playstation.com, stick it on a flash drive/removable HD and update the PS3 that way? Do you use the PSN at all Retr0? Because if the features don't mean much to you then why don't you just turn off your internet connection on the PS3 and then you won't ever have to update.

@noodler: I'm on wireless with a 10mb (~1.25MB) connection and firmware updates download in less than 5 minutes, a little bit faster if I do it from my PC. The Killzone 2 demo downloaded for me in about 30 minutes, so it's not the PS3 that's at fault. It's either peoples network setup or their connection/line attenuation etc.

I'm also interested in hearing what Joost is...(Edit: Joost is a video streaming website. They've got old cartoons, like Heman!)

The text chat system is actually surprisingly really good.

It's like having a MMO lobby chat across all your games. It loads instantly, and new messages pop-up while you're playing like message notifications do.

Start a room, invite your friends, have them invite your friends and see for yourself..it makes a big difference to the sense of community IMO.

    official press release:
Dublin, 2nd April 2009: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that system software update 2.70 for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) will be available from today. The capabilities of PS3 are stepping up yet another gear with this new system software update that gives users even more of the features they’ve requested from the ever-evolving PS3 service. This update will give players more freedom to text chat, make music playback more satisfying and make the Internet more accessible. The system software update can be downloaded by selecting System Update icon under the Setting column on XMB™ (Xross Media Bar) – and is completely free.

Here are some of its key features:

Text chat: The update makes it easy to chat: just set up a chat room, select anyone from your Friends list and invite them in – they’ll see an icon in the corner of their screen and know they’re wanted in your chat room. Up to 16 people can join the same room to chat using a controller, a connected keyboard or a Wireless Keypad. You can even start a chat while you’re halfway through a game.

Dynamic Normaliser for music: When you’re listening to a music playlist, a sudden increase in volume between tracks can make you jump out of your skin. Not any more - thanks to the Dynamic Normaliser, which reduces the difference in volume levels between your tracks and makes for a smooth listening experience all the way.

Better control of the Internet: Want to know more about the game you’ve just downloaded? Simply find its icon in your menu and select ‘Internet Search’ – you’ll be taken straight online to search for information about it. The 2.70 update also allows you to cut and paste text from your Internet Browser as well as send message attachments up to 3MB in size.

Language fixes: If you’re Polish, Greek, Czech, Slovak, and Turkish, you’ll particularly like the 2.70 update: it makes the necessary additions to your Internet Browser that enables you to read the full range of letters and characters from your national alphabet.

The 2.70 update is the latest in a series of updates provided since launch to help users get more from PS3. SCEE is always working on ways to help PS3 users get the fixes and services they ask for. To find out about what’s in the next one – just watch this space. For more information, visit www.playstation.com.

Nice..just turned my system back on and the chatrooms I was in before are still there. Some of the same people there, some new.

Seems like the rooms persist as long as you don't delete the shortcuts to them in your friends list.

Gah, the first post got me excited.. *sigh* I'd make a 50 euro donation/pay a yearly sub to Sony just so that they can get more people in to upgrade the PSN, would anyone else do that?

In a word no. The problem with brining in fees is that they will increase over time. The free PSN is one of the bigger advantages the PS3 has over the XB. But I would like more time dedicated to it from SONY though.

But how are they going to dedicate more time to it if they don't have the money? More dedication = More resources = More employees in the PSN division = More Money = Sub fees. As i said i would be more than happy to pay some €€€ for a decent friend's scheme, a scheme that will take ages tom come into effect atm because of the lack of funds.

Download it on your pc here http://ie.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/system-software/download/
seems to go faster for me than downloading on the console , and you can still play games while you wait.

Updates are a good thing, stop giving out about them !

No one will be happy until MKV support comes in but then thats not helping their blu ray market.

And as for ~40 mins to download the update, get over it, online junkie !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 950 ✭✭✭cotwold

So can you actually access the internet browser while in game or not?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 300 ✭✭superweld

no way would i want to pay for the psn no matter how many improvements they could make to it.

the whole point of it for me is to be able to play games online which i've been able to do since i got my ps3. that, for me is enough. the rest of the frills are not important and definitely not worth paying for

    No.

The updates are the cross-game chat rooms, faster browser performance, psn store video backups, faster trophy updating, dynamic equaliser for music, and increased message attachment size. Might be one or two others. The biggie is the chatroom stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

No I don't want to pay for online either. It was a big part of me going PS3. Thats around 200e+ over the the lifetime of the console, wouldn't make the 360 all that cheap in the end.

    Hey guys!

Don't know if this was mentioned already but the official PS3 headset problem seems to have been fixed. I had the volume input problem when I got the mic but I decided to give it a go when the new firmware came out and to my surprise, my voice seemed alot louder! Now I haven't tried this with a friend yet but from listening my own voice in the volume settings it seemed alot louder.

I have a Jabra headset that i got with Warhawk, cant find the usb cable for it though, its not a standard one
