    Heh,

Ive recently been thinking of starting a small buisness in my town. Its not a big town but I reckon if it was done right it might turn a small profit. Its a video shop id like to open it has been tried a few times with no success in the town. The reason being is because they had no good dvd's to rent... Noone wants to rent ancient dvd's at top notch prices.

Why I think it would work for me is:

    1) I would get all the latest releases (What I dont know is, Am I aloud to buy off the internet, and rent them) or is their a certain procudure I have to follow and if so what is it?

    2) I would reduce the price, They all charged 5euro per night, This is ridiculous, I would try to rent them for 3.50/4.00 per night.

    3) I know a place I could rent fairly cheep.

I would like appreciate any feedback on this if anyone is able to offer some. Its only a thought but I think I should be able to make a go of it.

I wouldnt have to emply anyone either as me and my girlfriend could run it. I work full time already but she is unemployed.

    thanks,
    brendaN

Brendan unless you want a slow and painful death stay away from video shops. Its a business of the past. Take a look at blockbuster, chartbusters etc

In Ireland have a look at screenclick or for the top of the pile have a look at Netflix - they have a service where you can stream a selection of 12 000 films to your tv using an xbox or similar device. Bring that service to Ireland and you might have something.

Actualy NO, if you look at the copyright notice on most DVD on sale, it says that you cannot rent them.

Copies are usually supplied to the DVD rental outlets in advance of them going on sale, but cost is €100+. That's how the movie companies get their share of the profit from the rental sales.

That's the reason the prevois stores did not have the latest releases, they could not afford them.

Maybe the reason the price is sooo high is the overheads...

Would the premise require planning permission for "change of use" ?

A mate of mine bought one of those dvd rental machines that you put into a supermarket recently. It's doing quite well, does require a level of work to keep it going, but the bottom line is that it's just about washing it's own face .......... that's breaking even/making a buck!!;)

I'd be of a similar mind to the above posts - stay away from it. If dropping the price by a Euro or two would drive business up AND increase profits , don't you think that's what the multiples would be doing right now??

The bolded line above says it all for me. Save your money because I guarentee you it will fail.

I can honestly say that I know very few people who rent DVD's anymore.
The new releases are available illegally but free on-line.
There are very well known DVD rippers who virtually compete to upload the most and newest movies!
As they're based in the US they have DVD Rips online before they even make it to the cinema over here, eg. Stephen King's "The Mist"

And don't forget those pesky Swede's

But Ireland might be the place for it I know loads of people that can't get broadband and if the can its Capped. How many gas stations or Centras rent them near you?How far do you have to go to rent one? Do people that live where you do have to go town anyway?I'd say a lot of people's only opption is a rental place? Good luck

Unless you live in a place that is equivalent to Bolivia, I'd stay away...
