Ok besides the petrol bill what else should i take into consideration?

Do they run on a chain or belt? Any common faults i should take into consideration?

    Thanks.

Care to be a bit more specific on model / engine / year? You planning on using it as a Dublin taxi?

All proper Mercs an BMWs use timing chains BTW FTW :D

Wise to buy one with a full documented service history (not just stamps in the book) or avoid or buy very very cheaply.

Imagine the fuel bill taxiing an S600

The only thing would be an expensive electrical fault rendering it (and you) off the road for a while...otherwise S320 CDi all the way. You'd probably get people clambering for a ride with one of those:D

I've a recent buyers guide from Mercedes Enthusiast - i'll scan and email it if you want. Apparently the CDI has a tendency to block injectors, at which time it can become apparent that they've welded themselves into the head. They recommend the V6 petrol as being more reliable.

Jesus you'll be looking at around 20mpg around town in that. On the plus side all the hotels will be calling you to ferry people around.

Lad I know is taxiing in an S320 and gets a lot of work out of hotels because of it

Go for it! You're probably spending long hours in the car these days and you might as well get yourself a nice place of work. You're probably doing your (long term) health a favour as well with a more comfortable car as well as it being automatic.

if you get that bowley you will be doing a few 24 hour shifts.
get a w201 instead, cheap to run comfortable and indstructible.

Sounds like you did well Volvoboy. I know those AMG alloys you're talking about and am a fan but am not sure about the quad tailpipes or lip spoiler.

Still, if it's a genuine 78k miles that sounds quite low for a '99 S-Class and sounds like you did very well indeed for the price. Maybe the next one will be a Volvo, eh?:p

    +1

Make sure you check it out thoroughly before you buy though. There were some quality issues with the early cars iirc. The W220 is by any standard a superb car. Good luck buying it!

A 1999 with 78k for €6k? Almost sounds too good to be true! I hope you checked absolutely everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

    Here's a good one.

Mercedes S320 CDI, 87k miles, only €3900 on northern plates.

Stick it in to the VRT calculator and what do they have the OMSP down as? €32355
€10353 in VRT. I reckon they just let their kids mash the keyboard in that office and see what price comes out!

Still mulling it over, i'll get a few pics of it up. It's only driven on the weekends hence low miles.
