Optimum Frame Size

    Guys,

Wondering what frame size I should look at when I up grade, presently use a 56 find it too small however I was in cycle superstore and got sized for a lapierre, they said a 56 would be ok; I also had a look at a 58 and preferred that size.

Is the centre of the front wheel to be in front, behind or centre, front or behind the handlebars.
Really wondering if bike sizes are generic. I’m 6’3’’ if that helps

probably a 58 is what you want. I'm the same height and that's what I ride.

I saw it in some magazine on the racks this month .... you can probably get away with getting a bike 1 size either side ... so either a 56 or a 58cm could suit you ... you can setup your saddle, stem, hoods etc such that your contact points are pretty much the same location ... the only difference is that the handling and bike behaviour will be markedly different .. the smaller bike will be twitchier and quicker responding and probably more suitable to racing ... while the bigger bike will be more stable and suitable for longer rides.

You should probably try to change components on your current bike to see if you can get it comfortable .. unless of course you want a new bike.

I'll be honest, give Barry in Worldwidecycles a shout, they actually have a Viner adjustable frameset in stock, it's for perfect setup. Afaik you need to book it in advance but the booking fee is refundable on a purchase (not sure of t&c) but they'd be worth a shot.

you can setup your saddle, stem, hoods etc
by moving your hoods closer to the start of the drop and then angling the bars further forwards? would this bring your reach back a bit?

    I would think at 6ft 3" your certainly looking at a 58, I'm 6ft and am on a 56 but I wouldn't be overstretched on a 58.

That article mentioned was in last weeks cycling weekly, it basically recommended going for the slightly smaller frame for a racier feel, a larger for a more relaxed feel (longer wheelbase).....I still think a 6ft 3" person should be on a 58!!

Shorter stem, usually. Doing what you suggest makes the drops less usable, and looks rubbish.

You can move the saddle forward, but this changes the relationship between the saddle and the bottom bracket.

I'm 6ft and have always ridden 58s. I could possibly fit on a 56 myself but someone 6ft3, I would severely doubt.

    56cm sounds ridiculously small for someone who's 6'3" - I'm about 5'8" on a good day and I'd ride a 56.
