I have to say Mercury was the best ever frontman
I seen and his ability to perform live in a stadium
was second to none; so flamboyant and so
energetic and such an amazing LIVE voice.

    Any thoughts or suggestions

Funnily enough this month's Classic Rock magazine are doing a top fifty frontmen from all eras, and Freddie came in at number one.

Eddie Vedder in his early Pearl Jam days was the real deal, completely wild, has calmed down a lot since then but still very good, Curt Cobain was another great frontman, everyone has their favorite so your not gonna get many people agreeing on this topic!

I'm with the op - Freddie Mercury was incredible - best rock voice going, and incredible energy on stage.

    Jim Morisson? B'ah!

Hey, an argument can be made for many, but Freddie is right in the frame here.

Jagger is another worth mentioning, but Jaggers voice doesn't compare
to Freddie, nor his overall musicianship.

Mercury was born to perform on the big stage. He's a stadium performer

    Trent Reznor!!!
    and i'm not biased! :p

Jim Morrision is vastly over-rated, VASTLY (psuedo intellectual lyrics and doesn't do much on stage)
Jagger is very good (seen him in the flesh) nearly 70 and fitter than most 20-30 year olds I know
    Plant was effortless and brilliant
    Axl is over-rated
Bono is just a stupid c*nt (ptoohie)
Bruce Dickinson (Seen him too) is incredible, the guy is endlessly fit to pump out those operatic blasts while sprinting around the stage
Nick Cave (Also seen him) is incredibly charismatic, such a presence on stage
But Freddie is the Don of all frontmen, he had is all, charisma, vocal ability, he knew how to work a crowd from 10 to 100,000, never seen a better guy (but never caught him live sadly)

All of the above mentioned are great.

But has everyone forgotten about David Coverdale of Whitesnake
The best blues rock voice in the business and still going strong
can sing the blues and can belt out the screamers too
    Great stage presence!

No, good point, my bro told me about a Whitesnake gig he was at when the power went down and Coverdale sang "Heart of the city", it was at Simmonscourt, but that guy didn't need a mic

A mention for Ian Gillan and Ozzy too (Gillan for the voice and Ozzy for being the ultimate rock star!)

For frontman it has to be Phil Lynott. Granted Thin Lizzy may have never reached the heights of say GnR or made it big in the US, but for sheer stage presence Philo wins hands down.

    Cheers,

Yes, I love Philo too, but I would not put him in my top 5, stationary front men rarely make the same impact

Actually, I saw Soulfly recently and have to admit Max Cavalera has a commanding stage presence too, maybe just because I was in awe of him from his Sepultura days.......

Surely Springsteen must be in the top 5 anyway. I still agree with Freddie Mercury though...and Jim Morrison should be up there too! Well i might as well add in Mick Jagger and Robert Plant to make the complete top 5 :D

Oh, and Bon Scott of AC/DC has to be considered!

By coming out with a phrase such as Pseudo Intellectual Lyrics are you not
Professing to be wise yourself! just goes to show how closed minded you are in my opinion.

its called opinion dude, for even mention cloesd minded i think you need to take a good look at yourself man, watch the wembley gig queen did, freddy did a vocal improve gettin every single person to replicate what he was doing, macic, look man you think what you want as will i, freedom of speech! nothing to do with closed minds.

I'm not particularly a Queen fan but looking at it objectively, Freddie Mercury has it hands down. He was the business, great entertainer.
Bruce Springsteen deserves an honorable mention, as well as Robert Plant and Axl Rose (despite his arsehole-ness)

It seems to me that Freddie is definitely highly regarded. The thing is, that even non Queen fans per se, can appreciate his showmanship, voice and energy, as well as his amazing ability to interact with a stadium audience.

I have seen many many acts, not LIVE, but I have seen them on DVD or TV
and I have yet to see anyone as polished and efficient and in the groove as Mercury and Queen. As Live acts go, they truly are awesome.

The Wembley gigs in July '86 were simply breathtaking.
The renditions of Radio Gaga was one of the finest live
    performances ever.

They talk about the Live aid gig and most
agree that Mercury and Queen were the best and many say it
was the fines live performance ever, I don't think it was, I think
it was the second greatest live performance ever. The Wembley gigs
    wer numero uno!

BTW, Springsteen was superb, a real ball of energy. Top notch!

Don't get me wrong, I love Soundgarden and Chris Cornell is a great vocalist but wtf? I saw them live at Sunstroke 94 I think it was, in the rds and I don't think the man uttered one word to the audience. They were very dull. And I was a big fan at the time.

Another vote for Freddie Mercury here. Saw him 4 times live in concert. Absolutely brilliant each time.

I have the most eclectic music taste of anyone I've ever met, I just think Morrisons' poetry was psuedy and over-rated, just my humble opinion mate

And there is a difference between psuedo-intellectual and intellectual, or pretencious as you were no doubt trying to insinuate. Badly.

    Freddie Mercury.

The guy had it all. The vocal ability and range that Freddie had was leagues above anybody else. The bigger the audience the better he performed.

One of a kind and a legend.

He invented some other terms as well - Bloated Dead Alcholic in a Bathtub is one that springs to mind.... Oh, and don't forget Incoherent, Rambling, Permanently-In-A-Drug-Induced-Haze, Overrated, Wannabe-Poet!

I never had the "pleasure" of seeing him live in the (bloated) flesh, but any footage I have seen of him "live", and I use that term loosely, have been like watching paint dry.

As for the original post, Freddie would be my 1st choice. Elton John is also a fabulous live performer.
