The biggest "joke" result you can remember?

In celebration of April Fools, what results stand out for you as being major upsets? Results that, had you heard on April 1st, would've just disregarded them as another stupid joke.

That Sunday in 2004 when both Armagh and Tyrone lost to Fermanagh and Mayo was crazy. I was in America at the time of the match and some Fermanagh relatives of mine rang me straight afterwards and were going absolutely insane. I just thought they were taking the piss :o

We don't really get "major" shocks in hurling these days, but I suppose recently, not many people would have expected Limerick to beat Waterford in 2007. Offaly defeating Kilkenny in the 98 All Ireland by 6 points was pretty significant too since they got their asses handed to them earlier in the Leinster final.

    Any others?

Clare beating Kerry in Munster Final 1992.
Dublin losing to Westmeath in Leinster 2004.
Wexford beating Meath in Leinster 2008.

Just some to start with, I'm sure there's plenty of others.

Yeah with Wexford having beaten Meath the previous 4 or 5 times that they had played that was a real shocker

I think it was more of a shock that they managed to come from so far behind at half time to win. But before the game many people were saying Wexford could do it.

I'd regard their victory over Armagh in the quarters as a far greater shock.

Sorry cruiserweight, I meant it was a shock them coming back from 10 points down, I had a funny feeling they would win that day but I've never seen a Meath side ever capitulate that badly.

Wouldn't regard that result as a shock given how poor Armagh have been for the past 2-3 years but a shock insofar as nobody gave Wexford a chance after been hammered in the Leinster final but fair play to them.

I don't think anybody expected Wexford to beat the All-Ireland champions Kilkenny in the 2004 Leinster Hurling Semi-Final.

    Being a tad biased here but;

Donegal beating Dublin in 1992 was a big shock at the time, lighters and t-shirts with "Dublin AI champions 92" being sold BEFORE the game

As mentioned Clare beating Kerry in same year too.

Was at a game in croker(double header) and Sligo pulled off a shock beating Tyrone, cant remember the year.

Think Sligo beat Tyrone in 2001, you can add Wicklow beating the Lilywhites last year to the list.

Kerry beating Waterford in the first round of the Munster Hurling Championship in 1993 and drawing with Kilkenny in the Natinal League a few months before it. An Austin Stacks hurler named Martin McKievergan kept DJ scoreless that day, Kilkenny had 13 of the team that won the AI in 1992 playing and won the AI again that year. I doubt I'll ever forget it.

Hardly a major upset. A Dublin team playing poorly that year, and a Westmeath team that had been knocking on the door in Leinster for several years.

But two other memorable upsets for me were Westmeath beating two class Derry and Kerry teams to win the AI minor in '95 and the AI U21 in '99 respectively. Especially as they were the first for us at both levels.:o

I guess the obvious big upset in hurling was Antrim beating Offaly in the AI semi in 1989.

Limerick hammering Meath last year when they scored like 5 goals.

Limerick footballers beating Cavan and Offaly a few years back and beating Armagh in the League at the Gaelic grounds a few years ago.

Great days for Limerick football the lot of them:D:D

I had been hoping that wouldn't be mentioned :(

In one of the first Christy Rings, Roscommon were beaten by Antrim by 66 points. That is just ridiculous.

    Antrim beating offaly in 1989.

Cork "donkeys" beating Tipp in Munster final 1990 (they were 9/2 that day to win Cork)

Tipp playing division 2 football......who saw that one coming .....might not be a one of result but hey its a strange one

A joke result? I'm hurt:( Nah, it was anything but a joke, the only joke that day was the state of the Kildare team. Wicklow outplayed them all over the pitch, could have won by a bit more.

Mayo taking the hill and coming from behind to beat Dublin in 2006. One of my favorite jokes.:D

Don't take any offence Mushy, Wicklow were super that day and Kildare were an absolute shambles but let's be honest, nobody really gave the Garden County a chance before throw in.

wow, the memories. believe it or not, i come from a hurling family, my dad played for kerry in hurling before moving to another county for a few years(work related only) and he played in 2 all ireland semis. so kerry hurling always holds a special place for me, that year was incredible, i never saw my dad as excited. i was only 10 and remember the day that we beat waterford and then i remember the following game where we lost to Tipp.

my dad was a proud man that year. i remember seeing cork in tralee and then i remember that kilkenny game. seeing dj carey in tralee was magnificent. those were magnificient years for kerry hurling, beating clare in 95 (i think it was) in the league and running several teams close in the league. considering the football werent going to great at that time, it was extra special. the current plight of the hurling team really gets to me, its a shame really, the potential is there to do so much better when you look at the standard of the club hurling but the players just do not care about the jersey, which is probably not their fault in all fairness.

i was going to say the meath match in 2001, but suppose this is as good as any.

how do you rate john evans as a manager? people are starting to talk about him as the next kerry manager.

excellent club record in kerry at the top level (not sure, but think he has an ireland club with the laune, defo a few county titles) and looks like he is doing well up there. if only he had declan browne still playing!

Shock(to people outside Wicklow) yes, joke result, no. Slight difference in terms. Might have been a joke if they trounced Kildare alright...but a nice joke:D

to be fair the last 3 or 4 managers tipp have had, have done well, if you remember tom mcglinchey the young cork man coming very close to getting one over his native county in munster final 2002 in thurles. they pushed donegal in croker in 03, although 04 was turbulent we only lost by 2 points to a handy limerick team. 05 we won the tommy murphy beating an up and coming wexford team and marked matty forde out of it. browne was fantastic theres no doubt about it but maybe it isnt such a bad thing that the the burden of scoring for the team has been spread evenly around a tight knit group of players as opposed to one man.

Wasn't really a joke for tyrone to get beaten by mayo that day. In the entire match mayo kicked something like 2 wides. They were the better team on the day and are not really footballing minnows.

Waterford beating Cork in the Munster Final 2004. Only mentioned this because Waterford were then hammered by Kilkenny in the semi-final, which was unusual seeming they could give Cork a great game and Cork went on to win All Ireland.

Kilkenny beating Cork by 27 points in the league, can't remember the date but both sides had won the last 7 titles between them and people were expecting more form a reunited and fired up Cork side.;)

KK only beat them by 3 points in the end but i can see how you could remember it as a hammering as waterford were well down at half time after conceding 3 soft goals. Actually decie were good enough to win it in 2nd half in fairness.

2 i can think of Clare beating kerry 1992 was at the Game.Kerry lads were sick and still are id say.

Sligo beating Galway in connact final given that they got relegated to Div 4 the next season.

Daysha I would not call Limerick beating Waterford in 07 as a joke result.:)

anyone remember Cork v Offaly in semi final in 2000?

Cork were only expecting to turn up that day reigning all-ireland champions munster champions again and I remember Derry giving Offaly a scare in the quater final that year.

Think Offally won by 2-3 points

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 287 ✭✭RocketRonnie

What about Meath hammering Kerry by 15 points in the 2001 all-ireland semi-final!!!:D I wonder when Kerry were last beatin by so much??? dont bother mentioning the all-reland final of that year:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,256 ✭✭✭LeoB

Dublin beating Waterford and Galway in league this year. You didnt expect that lads. Offaly beating Meath in 97? Leinster final. Westmeath beating Dublin in Hurling championship 2 or 3 years ago.
KK beating Kildare in Walsh Cup a few yers ago. And did Kildare hold Meath scoreless in a Walsh cup game about 15 years ago

A few more have come to my mind

Kerry thrashing Cork in the 2002 football semi final.
Kerry beating Mayo in the 2004 and 2006 All Irelands. Complete joke.
Kerry beating Cork in the 2007 all Ireland.
Cork beating Mayo in the football semi final in 1993 (Cork 5-15 Mayo 0-10) Massacre.
    Dublin beating Wexford last year.
Tyrone beating Dublin last year....so much expected from the dubs after hammering Wexford
