In fiction, TV, movies, is Ireland basically:

    - The Troubles
    - Dublin
    - A tiny village in an unnamed county somewhere in d'wesht?

I was struggling to think of anything set in a small town or in another city. Angela's Ashes (Limerick), Pure Mule (Tullamore?), The Butcher Boy (Cavan town), um...

whats your problem , try rewriting a James Bond film based on an Irish secret sevice that protect the world from global domination. Or how about a new version of Independance Day where Ireland has built a secret reseach base under the Phoenix park , you would have some great lines about where all the money went:D

Mad Max, 28 Days Later and almost all other post-apocalyptic movies were set in Athlone. Those bleak, desolate, deserted streets at the start of 28 Days Later are often said to be the result of amazing special effects. But they're not. They're just ordinary Athlone effects.

What irks me is when they get non-Irish to play Irish characters.

I was watching The Borstal Boy yesterday, which is an Irish made film and the main character of Brendan Behan was played by an American with a horrid accent.

    Where's the logic?

Don't forget to'The Hills Have Eyes' which was filmed in Finglas West. The filmmakers didn't need a make-up budget for the deformed hillbillies, they just hired locals to play the roles.

I wonder why Colin Farrell wasn't at this casting call ?

Oh right, he is too busy using that horrible American accent in Hollywood films.

    Banned.

    Same with Braveheart.
A couple of my friends worked on the film.
There was a football match with Irish and Scottish on one side and English on the other. Mel Gibson joined in until someone tackled him.
The producers were straight onto to the pitch to make sure he wasn't hurt and then told him he couldn't play any more.
    Everyone laughed.

Adam and Paul is a great movie.

Also I used to be a heroin addict and my days pretty much went like that all the time. Except for
    the dying part.

Isnt satire suppose to be funny, and based loosely on what it intends to satirise?

His American accent is much better than most attempts at ours.

A few Heroes episodes were set in Cork. Dire as they were.

Yes. Every day. So it was very realistic and true to life.

While it wasn't the funniest, i think it satarised the sterotype of inner city dubs quite well.

Then again, i'm not paticularly attached to where i happen to have been born that i get butthurt every time it's not painted in a glowing light.

28 days later had too many big buildings to be Athlone. It was also too clean although agree with the deserted streets! :pac:

What an ignorant statement, have you ever even been to any city in Ireland OTHER than Dublin?

What r u on about? They are great movies (except Accelerator, which was rather average at best).I quite liked Crushproof but was weird to see that the main character in it (a violent scobe jailbird), was played by a real life violent scobe jailbird (Darragh Healey). How life imitates art. Loved Spin the Bottle. Shame the actor who played Rats (Michael McElhatton) hasn't done a thing interesting since.
