Very odd iTunes problem

Right, I was doing some iPod updating when I noticed I was running out of memory. I looked at my devices which told me I had 14.49 GBs of music. I knew that couldn't be right, and a quick glance over to my library told me I actually had on 14.09 GB of music.

Thats 400 MB of audio on my iPod which I don't know what it is.

I've tried everything. I restored the iPod to factory settings, nothing. I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, nothing. So then I deleted by entire iPod library and re-synced the music, which helped.....kind of.

The amount of music went down, but only from 14.49 to 14.25 GBs. Links:

To make matters even weirder, my iTunes library is telling me I have 3142 songs....my iPod is telling me I have 3141, even though I always sync my entire library. So I'm left with:

iTunes - 3142 songs and 14.09 GB of music
iPod - 3141 songs and 14.25 GB of music

    WTF?!

a couple of things spring to mind

1 you need to get out more often
2 the missing 1 song is in a format the ipod doesn't recognise
3 your pulling a smooth one for the day that it is
4 the missing .16GB is used for holding the ipod OS, and or formatting
5 do you think the light in the fridge really goes off when you close the door?

    :)

I take it I have inadvertently fallen for this right?

    I am such a spanner.

As it is a 16 GB iPod can only technically hold 14.64 GB because 1.5 is taken up holding the OS and other stuff. And even if it was holding the OS 1) why would it be under audio and 2) why would it decrease in size when I did a total resync?

I presume the missing song is just because something has got misplaced in my library and can't be synced. The reason I posted that was to prove that it wasn't simply a 160MB song taking up the space.

I guess I can understand that today of all days people will be on high alert. But this ain't an April Fools joke...i don't even know how it could be tbh. I've 160 MBs on my iPod and I haven't a clue what it is. What's the problem there?

An "identical" file living on both devices with a different initial source would account for a small difference. I'd have a lot of tracks that are duplicated from compilations/albums where a few seconds or a better sample/bit rate would render one file bigger than another. Click on "file" on your toolbar, then "Show Duplicate files" so see if something small is replicated in one of the lists, eg a ripped file that was disrupted, a podcast or mini track? Also, you could sort your tracks out in file size from top to bottom to see if there is larger files that can give you a little more space.

Ok I've done that, and I have a list of all the songs that have the same name twice, but aren't necessarily the exact same song, if you get me. Eg on the list is Hysteria from Muse's album Absolution, as well as Hysteria from thei live album which I've got as well.

What I don't get is that the total number of duplicates comes to 786 MBs, far greater than the 150 MBs I've posted about above.

Apart from that, nothing seems out of the ordinary.

Have you taken into account the album cover art?

Not a bad idea actually. Let me check...

Ok...the album art folder is......160 MB

Bingo, that's the one. Thanks for that.
