Can't see it making much difference tbh, deals are already thier to be had if you have the cash. Are banks gloing to make cheap credit any more availible?

€5k government environmental scrappage subsidy for any private person scrapping their old car (the car must be currently taxed and rated at over 200g/km of CO2 pollution). Offer valid only tomorrow though!

That can't work - you can't get C02 data for a whole load of cars....so how's that to work ?

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

See the VRT thread in the sticky. There are several sources of CO2 data for older cars that are acceptable. If none of these is available, the CO2 figure can be calculated based on manufacturers fuel consumption figures. See here.

Don't think 2k is enough to make someone scrap an old car & buy new. Would only tempt someone for the cheapest cars.

    Cheapest New List prices
    Chevrolet Matiz 800SE 10k
    Fiat Panda 11.2k
    Ford Ka 11.5k

It's 5k - see my post. That's serious money. Maybe I should scrap my BMW or my Porsche?

As already mentioned the problem most people have is they cannot get credit or find it more difficult to get. All the scrapage schemes in the world will not solve that.

Similar thing with mortgages, builders/estate agents are doing everything they can to shift houses but it's in vain if a buyer cannot get approved on a mortgage.

I've just come off the back of a promotion where our manufacturer decided they wanted rid of all their old stock ( i.e anything they had in stock over 9 months) . I was selling certain models at just about half price and out of the 200 odd phone calls I made since Friday morning until promo ended yesterday evening I managed to shift 5. That included fleet companies that we do some business with aswell. Really its so bad at the moment its nearly impossible to give them away and I dont think no matter how much you give off the price if people are nervous they just wont spend money. VAT needs to be cut to match UK VAT and business customers need to be VAT exempt altogether similar to if they were to buy something from the UK. At the moment an Irish VAT reged customer has to pay VAT on all purchases and claim it back but if that customer goes to the North or over to England they dont have to pay VAT at all because they are importing something. By buying the Irish product even if the VAT excluded price is the same it still uses up more of a companies cashflow until they get the VAT back. This needs to change and would make a huge difference to Irish business I MO.

I'm also sceptical as to how much effect it will have. The majority of people who've been buying new cars for years will have realised that they have a perfectly good car in their driveway and a lot less money to spend. The main difference it will make is to free up the cash of the people who've been sitting on it since SIMI started putting out press releases about a scrappage scheme. That's a self made problem...

unless people have cash in their pocket where are they going to get finance for a new car? this is a complete joke, people want less expense not more debt during a recession:mad:

The way out of a recession is to get people spending. Some people may not be up to their necks in debt!

Thats true but even if people still have money in their pocket and be in a relatively sound finanicial position being up to speed on their loans the problem is negative equity and the fact that banks want 20% down minimum and will only finance 80% of the value of the car. Now you might have no money problems at all but if you owe double what your car is worth then where do you go.....not to mention that the banks wont even give good people money at the moment.

This scheme is mis-directed as it's aimed at people who don't typically buy new cars anyway. People drive ten year old cars either because they can't afford to, or don't wish to, drive newer ones.

The consumers who've withdrawn from the market are in the main those who replace their cars every three or four years with new models. The scrappage scheme won't apply to them.

    spot on,

I'm never going to trade my 13 year old golf gti for a new ford Ka/dewoo matiz..... even if it will "only" cost me 5K after the scrappage is applied... pointless moving of deckchairs on the titanic again

I hear ya lads, Im not driving anything fancy like a golf gti or a BMW but I have a 9 year old vectra - not the greatest car in the world but I wouldnt swap it for a 1 litre micra if I had the choice! never mind spending a thousands to do so!!

I do have a fear......that they wont get the desired results out of this....and the next step will be to tax the older bunch of cars off the road.

Could happen easily now that they drew a line between older and newer cars with the new CO2 based motor tax. Not beyond the realms of possibilities that they could continually increase motor tax on older cars and leave the newer ones alone (or increase them too but not as much). More cars are taxed annually under the old system than the new so they gain far more by increasing the old tax........
