Gaaah... sometimes I hate my PC. It's freezing randomly online. Doesn't matter if I use Chrome, Firefox or IE. I thought it might be a virus but I ran a scan with Avast and it's clean. Thought it might be XP SP3, so I uninstalled that (the service pack 3 I mean). No go, and today it wouldn't even boot, so I had to boot from a Windows CD, which got it running. There's nothing odd running in the processes and nothing strange in msconfig either.

    Next steps:

    - Install Avira and uninstall Avast
    - ????
    - ????
    - Profit!!!! :pac:

Yeah I know ;) Anyone got any suggestion as to my next step? I really don't feel like reinstalling Windows!

You're coming to a conclusion that its a Windows issue, doesn't sound like a Windows issue to me, more like hardware. Could be a number of issues, faulty psu, overheating, failing memory stick etc, etc. Run memtest, prime95 to test the memory and stress the cpu, run hdtune to test the hard drive. Also clean the dust from inside the pc case in case its overheating, measure your cpu temps with CoreTemp as You're stressing the cpu with Prime95.

Edit, first thing You could do is try Windows in safe mode

So the PC freezes totally? You have to switch it off manually? Or just the browser?
Could be some MS service that Windows use when you are online, or something in the registry.

So while its freezing, what happens when you sever the internet/network connection?

Possibly a problem with your flash player? See if you can remove it and reinstall it.

    Update:

It was a hardware problem after all. The network card was failing, crashing the PC only when online. The odd thing is that my network 'card' is integrated. Anyway I bought another one for €10, slotted it in and have have no crashes since then. Thanks for the help guys!
