Right heres one that recking my head.

Server can ping and remote desktop to the client computer. Both running windows 2000.

Client however cannot ping the server but can map a drive to the server.
The application that running on the client cant connect to the server.

    WTF.

These two computers are on a simple LAN, no firewalls are setup.

    Any ideas?

I can't remember too much about this but if you do some research on icmp being enabled/disabled as well as check out your lan settings which protocols are installed. Check that the windows firewall is disabled as well as any third party.
In the lan connection properties theres an advanced tab (beside general) which has firewall settings in there let me know how you get on

icmp is enabled in the registry

there is no firewall of any kind installed on either machine.

there is nothing wrong with the server responding to a ping because i can ping it from another pc if i hook it up to the lan which is totally strange.

Meh anyway ive fobbed the problem off to someone else at work but its a very strange problem.
